Think culturally, act locally – Understanding the Chinese community’s concerns about the Future Care Planning in Northern Ireland
文化思维与本地实践:北爱华人社区未来照护计划的关切
Thursday 26 February 2026
13:00-14:00
The Auditorium, McClay Library

Speaker:
Lijun XUE (薛丽君) is a PhD candidate in Nursing and Midwifery at Queen’s University Belfast, supervised by Prof. Kevin Brazil. Lijun’s research focuses on developing a culturally sensitive future care planning intervention for the use among Chinese ethnic communities in the UK. Her broader interests include palliative and hospice care, public health education and cultural adaptation. She previously earned a master’s degree in Nursing and Midwifery from the Queen’s University Belfast.
Abstract:
This talk explores how cultural differences between Northern Ireland and China shape the ways individuals and families discuss the future, make decisions, and prepare for care.
Drawing on examples from diverse cultural contexts, it highlights how language choice, communication styles, and social norms influence people’s comfort levels and expectations when engaging in conversations about planning ahead. By understanding these cultural dynamics, we can better support inclusive, person-centred future care planning that respects the identities, family structures, and cultural backgrounds of individuals from Chinese ethnic communities.
The talk seeks to encourage more compassionate and culturally informed dialogue, enabling people to make decisions that reflect what matters most to them and to enhance communication between Chinese ethnic residents in Northern Ireland and local healthcare providers.

The talk was informative and engaging. It made me think about my future care planning, which was a new concept to me and needs more public awareness. This has been a meaningful research. I really enjoyed the talk and look foward to more results of the research. Thank you for organising the event.
Thanks for coming and joining in the meaningful discussion. Hope this will inspire your work in some ways. Sure there is a chance to follow up the research if you wish and hope you will be able to share your research with us one day.
I am very interested in this research area. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the event. I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know how I might contact the author to learn more about the work. Thank you in advance.
Hi Jing, thanks for your interest in this topic. I will forward your request to the speaker for you to get in touch.
Hi Jing, Thank you for your interest in this topic. I’m about to begin the next phase of my study, which involves inviting participants to review a future care planning booklet designed for people with a Chinese cultural background living in the UK. If you’re interested in taking part, please sign in via the link or you can email me, and I will send the event details to your email.
