Opening music and greeting from QUB President and Vice Chancellor
In this opening performance, DENG Wei (邓维), MA graduate in Arts Management, from QUB is playing a traditional Chinese instrument, the 古筝 or ‘guzheng’ whilst QIAO Zexuan (乔泽轩), PhD candidate in Music at QUB is playing the Small-pipes, together with Thomas Smith playing guitar in the trio. This performance brings Chinese and Celtic musical traditions together to celebrate the arrival of the Spring festival and the Chinese New Year of the Tiger during the first weeks of February, 2022.
In his message, Prof Ian Greer points out that Tiger loves adventure and challenge – the two characteristics will take you afar here at Queen’s. It’s not that you have to be always the strongest – life is that using all skills you have and those you’ve learned to take you further.
Welcomes and greetings
Welcome remarks were made by Thomas Smith on behalf of the Language Centre and Adone Sarip, co-chair of the Queen’s BAME&I Staff Network, to highlight the joint efforts to further promote linguistic and cultural diversity, equality and inclusion on Queen’s multicultural campus and beyond.
Language Centre Mandarin Chinese tutors and students learning Mandarin Chinese at Queen’s also sent their bilingual CNY greetings and wishes to all.

ArtEast Exhibition
It is the second year that the Language Centre collaborates with the ArtEast Club to host this online exhibition, covering a wide range of paintings that reflect the artists’ beliefs in and attitudes towards life and pandemic challenges since its breakout.
Guest Talk and scheduled culture talks
It was a great pleasure to invite our guest speaker, Mr James Brodie, Commercial Director: Industrial Economy from China-Britain Business Council, to share his personal and professional trajectory of learning foreign languages and developing his intercultural competence through encounters.
We also took pride in introducing the culture talks led by Queen’s staff and students, presenting their work and sharing their experience related to China on a wide range of cultural topics that may suit audience of diverse interest.
Cultural Performances
The launch event also presented a selection of cultural performances and demo, as displayed, contributed by both Queen’s students (alumni), staff members and members of the public and societies, as an inclusive celebration.
