Abstract:
This talk explores how cultural differences between Northern Ireland and China shape the ways individuals and families discuss the future, make decisions, and prepare for care.
Drawing on examples from diverse cultural contexts, it highlights how language choice, communication styles, and social norms influence people’s comfort levels and expectations when engaging in conversations about planning ahead. By understanding these cultural dynamics, we can better support inclusive, person-centred future care planning that respects the identities, family structures, and cultural backgrounds of individuals from Chinese ethnic communities.
The talk seeks to encourage more compassionate and culturally informed dialogue, enabling people to make decisions that reflect what matters most to them and to enhance communication between Chinese ethnic residents in Northern Ireland and local healthcare providers.
