About the project

Bridges to China is a collaborative co-production project in which the Chinese Welfare Association, National Museums NI and AvilaMedia CIC are working with Queen’s Centre for Public History researchers.

The project aims to transform public understanding of the Chinese items at National Museums NI (NMNI). Currently limited historical data is available for this collection and there are few opportunities for public access to them. Supported by other members of the project team, the Chinese community will research the items, share their expertise and understanding of them, and creatively respond to them, generating new documentation and a community response that will be collected into a published digital output.

The project aims to enhance public understanding of Chinese heritage and culture in Northern Ireland. It also aims to foster community partnerships leading to further collaboration and community engagement around the longstanding links between Northern Ireland and China.

Bridges to China is supported by the AHRC through an Impact Accelerator Account Leading Impact grant. It builds on the researchers’ previous projects, Museums, Empire and Northern Irish Identity and Many Memories, Many Voices (https://mmmv.org), and their ongoing work within the Centre for Public History on Historic Houses, Global Crossroads.
