Restricted Access to Special Collections Materials: for 3 weeks from Monday 11 November 2019

Due to  the installation of the new fire suppression system at Special Collections & Archives we must modify service operations (retrieval and re-shelving ) for the next 3 weeks.

Staff at Special Collections & Archives will not be able to offer the usual on demand service (retrieval of materials from the Store). There will be timed retrievals scheduled at 10.00 – 10.30 and 13.00 -13.30 and 17.00-19.00 Monday to Friday. These times will be strictly observed in order to facilitate the work and have it completed as quickly as possible. Saturday service will not be impacted by the building work.

The requirement to provide at least 24 hours advance notice for manuscript requests will have to be strictly enforced.

The restrictions starts on Monday 11 November 2019. We will alert you to the completion of work and revert to normal on demand services for print materials.

The McClay Library Expansion Project – November 2019 Update

This is the latest in a series of regular updates to keep you informed on progress of the McClay Library Phase 3 expansion project.

This project delivers a significant number of additional PCs and study seats in the library and many of these are now in place:

  • The courtyard area on the ground floor provides over 100 PCs and 9 additional study rooms (individual and group)
  • The student lounge on the ground floor has been doubled in size
  • Additional study seats and PCs have been added to floors 1 and 3

The project is nearing completion with outstanding work in the following areas:

Special Collections

Work on the extension to the Special Collections store is ongoing with access via staircase 1 and the Special Collections Reading Room. As a result, readers consulting Special Collections are currently being relocated to the Special Collections Seminar Room.

Ground floor atrium area

A new silent study room with 67 seats is being created at the bottom of the atrium (opening December 2019)

While we do our utmost to minimise disruption (and particularly disruptive work will be completed out of hours or carried out as early in the morning as possible), please note that this is a major building project so there may be some background noise.

If you have any particular feedback or questions, please contact: library@qub.ac.uk

15 months until RefWorks is cancelled

This post is to remind you that the Library at Queen’s is cancelling its RefWorks subscription at the end of December 2020. In place of RefWorks, the Library has subscribed to EndNote.

Other, free reference management tools are also available, such as Mendeley and Zotero; you are welcome to use these as well as or instead of EndNote, but please be aware that the Library has a limited capacity to support their use.

At the end of December 2020, all Queen’s University Belfast students and staff will lose access to their RefWorks accounts in their current form.

HSC staff who have access to RefWorks via current or past affiliations with Queen’s will also be affected by this.

Ahead of the cancellation, you should transfer your RefWorks references to EndNote or another tool if you wish to continue using them. You can also transfer your Mendeley library to EndNote if you wish.

For more information , and links to Library Help FAQs about transferring your RefWorks references to EndNote, please visit the Library’s dedicated EndNote LibGuide: https://libguides.qub.ac.uk/referencing/endnote

English Poetry (600-1900), 2nd Edition – Trial access now available

Trial access for QUB staff and students to this resource is available until 27 October 2019 – please follow this link.

English Poetry, Second Edition redefines the English poetic canon for the 21st century, building on the achievement of the original English Poetry collection with enhanced functionality and the addition of more than 20,000 poems. The most comprehensive archive of English verse available now offers incomparable representation both of the literary heritages of former colonial countries and of the poetic legacies of English writers who have only been brought back to scholarly attention during the last thirty years.

Please send feedback to Diarmuid Kennedy.

Distance Learners Survey – You said, we did

Thank you to everyone who responded to the Library Services Distance Learners survey.  The aim of the survey was to find out levels of satisfaction with Library services, access to resources and support being provided to this group.  There was a high percentage of overall satisfaction among Distance Learners however the comments received did give some insight on what areas could be improved.

As a result:

  1. The Library has created an online guide from which Distance Learners can find key information on the services available to them.
  2. The Library is undertaking to create some introductory online tutorials to help distance learners become familiar with how best to use library resources to search for relevant information and literature.  These will be available from the Libguide mentioned in point 1.
  3. The Library is investigating if it is possible to provide a document supply service to this group.
  4. The Subject Librarian will send an email, via the School, at the beginning of your course introducing the support they offer and outlining key support tools available.
  5. The Library is going to be working with the relevant Schools to ensure the Libguide and online tutorials is integrated into student handbooks.

Unfortunately some suggestions received are outside the control of the Library.  There was a suggestion of having a partner programme with overseas libraries through which Distance Learners could borrower from a library nearby.  Unfortunately there is no such programme but students might wish to investigate with other libraries in their local area if they provide any type of membership such as QUB’s Associate Membership scheme.

Update January 2020: A Library group is currently investigating the possibility of initiating a document delivery service in the new academic year for PG Taught students, including distance learners. We will keep you updated as to progress as and when we can.
