Database of the Month: Nexis UK

Nexis UK

Worldwide newspaper coverage from the past forty years.

Newspapers are a rich information source and can also raise the quality of the research in many academic areas. Contemporaneous reports of an incident, reported in a reputable news source quickly become sources for historical research; how a new law is received, how political events change a country, what impact financial markets have on a society…

Newspapers can inform, inspire, confirm, contextualise.

Nexis UK provides access to a wide range of news and business sources.

Nexis UK contains over 20,000 full-text sources including 12,500 news sources, local, national and international, (local newspapers include the Belfast Telegraph; Irish News and Belfast Newsletter) and a huge range of company, financial and industry sources. The database also includes access to a variety of trade and professional business journals.

It is possible to search groups of sources (for example, UK Broadsheets, Major World Newspapers) or an individual publication. Coverage is from the 1980s onwards and is updated daily.

A range of tutorials to help you use the database effectively is available from the Help link on the Nexis website.

Nexis is available from the main catalogue and is also listed on the newspaper area of the LibGuides. Take time to explore the databases of older newspapers and periodicals on the same page.

International Open Access Week begins 23rd October 2017

This year’s International Open Access Week kicks off on the 23rd October with the theme “Open in order to…”

The theme is an invitation to answer the question of what benefits can be realized by making scholarly outputs openly available.

In the past our team has spoken of the many potential benefits that open access can bring to a wide range of people. This year however, we decided that we wanted to focus specifically on the benefits of OA to the researcher and their publication. We wanted to hear directly from our academics here at Queen’s and find out if they felt OA has had a positive impact on their publication.

To achieve this, we decided to create a new page on our OA LibGuide devoted to discovering the “Impact of Open Access”.  This new webpage contained a simple “Open Access Feedback” box where academics could share their OA experience and thoughts with us.

A small number of Queen’s academics were emailed and invited to share their OA experience.  Within a very short space of time, over half of the academics emailed had responded.

What was really pleasing and perhaps a bit surprising was the level of detail in each response. It became clear that our academics have had their own specific OA experience and they were happy to share this with us.

The great benefit of our “Impact of Open Access” page has been that we no longer have to only speak of the potential benefits that open access can bring.

So whether it’s “Open in order to… “widen the parameters of who has access to my research” or  “achieve significantly higher citations and greater attention from the scientific community and beyond”, we can now say that the benefits to making scholarly outputs openly available are real.

If you would like to share your OA experience with us, please visit our “Impact of Open Access” page.

On your reading list? Not in the Library? Let us know!

Blogfinal image TF

The Library makes every effort to hold the key texts that are on reading lists.

If you are a student, and after checking the Library catalogue, you find the Library does not hold a book title on your reading list then you can submit a request to purchase the book. This can be done by either sending us a book form or emailing the details to your Subject Librarian.

The Librarian responsible for your school will receive the request. If they think it is appropriate and book funds are available they will order the book, however funds are limited and so the Library may not be able to purchase every request. We will get back to you once we’ve received your request and let you know what action is going to be taken.

It can take anything from two weeks to several months for a book to arrive and be available for borrowing so in the meantime you could try the following:

  • check the catalogue to see if another book would be useful. You can search by keyword, author and title.
  • check the Readings Online available for your Module, there may be useful scanned journal articles and book chapters. To access these, just select the relevant Module in Queen’s Online look under ‘Library Links’ and you will see any scanned readings attached to that module.

If you have any further queries about reading lists or Readings Online please contact your subject librarian by clicking on the relevant guide.
