Improvements to Induction for Our New International Students – You Said, We Did

Through listening to student feedback, we became aware that our Semester 2 cohort of international students were not benefitting from the same level of Library induction that is delivered to those who arrive in the first semester. In order to remedy this situation we put the following plans into action:

  • We contacted all newly arrived international students in early January to invite them to sign up for an introductory session to the Library.
  • When we had a list of those who were attending together, we invited all of the appropriate subject librarians to attend the session so that the new students could meet with them
  • Everyone who attended received information about key library resources and tools to support them in their studies as well as a tour around the McClay Library

We became aware that, because of the early intake in 2018, a number of new international students were late for induction and so missed the opportunity to attend this session. To address this we:

  • Invited newly arrived international students to attend the Library ‘Not too late’ sessions which were devised to ensure that all students had a chance to get the best from the Library

All sessions were attended by a mixture of Erasmus, Study Abroad and INTO Queen’s students who gave us great feedback. This is an initiative we plan to run each year to make sure that all Semester 2 intake students have access to the information they need to succeed in the Library at Queen’s.
