New Royal Society of Chemistry Platform Launched

The Royal Society of Chemistry has just launched a new, updated, content delivery platform for all its publications. It is hoped that the end of July timing for this launch will keep any possible disruption to RSC journal access to a minimum. Also, until everyone gets used to the updated website, for a short time, the old platform will run alongside the new one.

All our current subscriptions to Royal Society of Chemistry journals will link now to the new platform. Links to RSC magazines and news articles on the site are also included.

No registration is required but the RSC does recommend that anyone wanting to save searches or set up alerts should register on the site. Existing journal email alerts will not be affected.

Also available from the new website is a link to ChemSpider  – a free chemistry database provided by the RSC. ChemSpider brings together chemical structures and associated information into a single resource and offers text and structure searching. It includes 25 million compounds with over 400 data sources.

Reading Lists Reminder for Teaching Staff

Have you sent your Semester 1 reading lists to your Subject Librarian yet? The Library needs to know which books you will be recommending during the next academic year to ensure that they are in stock and that there are enough copies for your students. But it takes time for the lists to be processed and for the new books to arrive, so help us to help you by getting your lists in early. Reading lists can be sent in any format: in print, via email or as a Word document. If required, the Subject Librarians can provide advice about the most appropriate loan status for each text, whether multiple copies should be purchased and the availability of electronic books.

REAXYS – a new Chemistry database

Good news for all those interested in any aspect of Chemistry. We now have access to Reaxys, www.reaxys.com, the fully web-based, updated version of the Crossfire database, but with a simpler, more streamlined interface.

Reaxys is an extensive repository of experimentally validated chemical data, including structures, reactions (including multi-step reactions) and physical properties. The information, dating back to the late eighteenth century, is drawn from source publications carefully selected for their importance and relevance particularly to synthetic chemists. Some of this information is not available through any other database.

Reaxys includes everything that was available through the Crossfire database but with many more easily accessible features and additional search capabilities, such as the ability to generate a structure query directly from names and/or phrases. The old Beilstein and Gmelin databases have been amalgamated for easier searching and, of course, there is still a powerful structure searching facility. Reaxys supports various Structure Editors, including Isis Draw, Symyx, the Crossfire Structure Editor and Marvin Sketch – the default Structure Editor. Search results can be filtered by key properties, synthesis yield or by other ranking criteria. All IUPAC names are available through the supported structure editors. Existing full-text links to our journals will be as before.

No username and password are required for access on campus but these will be necessary off campus. Registration is also required when setting up alerts and saving search histories.

Reaxys can run on Apple operating systems so there should not be any problems using Macintosh computers.

For further information or help, please contact Joan Whitaker, J.Whitaker@qub.ac.uk, ext. 6270.

Search from anywhere with IEEE Xplore Mobile

IEEE Xplore Mobile allows you to search over two million IEEE and IET journal articles and conference papers using any web-enabled mobile device. You can conduct a basic search and then refine it by searching within the results or by using subject filters. IEEE Xplore Mobile will display the results ten at a time by relevance and, if you are using your device in a QUB wireless-enabled building, you will be able to get full-text access to the documents.

Training Room One in The McClay Library

This training course, which complements ‘How to Write a Literature Review’ run by the Learning Development Service, explores how to make the best use of science and engineering databases to find relevant literature and how to make the best use RefWorks to manage references.

Content

  • Accessing and searching science and engineering databases including Compendex and the Web of Science
  • Accessing science and engineering e-journal articles
  • Creating a RefWorks account
  • Importing references into RefWorks
  • Organizing references in RefWorks
  • Using RefWorks to format citations and produce a bibliography in a Microsoft Word document

RefWorks 2.0 launched

RefWorks 2.0 is now available at Queen’s and will run in parallel with RefWorks Classic for the next few months. The new interface uses intuitive Web 2.0 conventions and has a more visually-appealing layout, retaining all the functions that you are used to but making them easier to find and use. When you log in to your account, just click on the link at the top of the page to switch between RefWorks Classic and RefWorks 2.0. All of your references, folders and settings will be available in both versions until September when RefWorks Classic is due to be turned off.

Windows 7 and article requesting fault

It seems that the inter-library loan article requesting service does not work properly with the Windows 7 operating system.  The article details are not transmitted to library staff who are therefore unable to process the request.

Until the problem has been resolved article requests should be submitted by one of the following methods:

  • On a computer with an operating system other than Windows 7
  • Via the ‘Place Request’ facility on the Library Catalogue
  • By filling in and submitting a printed form available from the Library

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.  The fault has been reported to the software suppliers and we hope there will be a speedy resolution.
