Changes to Library Catalogue item descriptions

Queen’s has now implemented new rules for the description of catalogue items. This brings us into line with RDA (Resource Description and Access) cataloguing principles – a revised approach to cataloguing currently being adopted by the library community. The new description rules will only affect new and revised entries in our catalogue and the immediate impact will be relatively slight.

The main changes are as follows:

  • No more use of standard abbreviations in edition statements and elsewhere (edition statements transcribed as they are in the source; ‘pages’, ‘illustrations’ etc spelled out).
  • Additional designators, ‘author’, ‘editor’, ‘illustrator’ etc, follow names given in the catalogue record (these can be seen under ‘added authors’ in the full catalogue record)
  • ‘[electronic resource]’ and ‘[videorecording]’ no longer to be used as an addition to the title entry for non-print material  (ebooks,  ejournals and DVDs).

The long term strategy for RDA is to create an approach to catalogues and cataloguing in which different ‘expressions’ of works – e.g. various editions, translations etc – are grouped together under entries for a work. Different media ‘manifestations’ are also to be described more exactly. We are adding the relevant database entries for this, but the new fields will not be displayed in the immediate future.

The effect of the new rules can be seen in the following QCat records:

Modern Languages Featured Database April 2014 : FRANTEXT

frantextThe FRANTEXT database consists of over 2900 texts, ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. The eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries are about equally represented, with a smaller selection of seventeenth century texts as well as some medieval and Renaissance texts. Genres include novels, poetry, theatre, journalism, essays, correspondence, and treatises. Subjects include literary criticism, biology, history, economics, and philosophy.

FRANTEXT is produced by ATILF (Analyse et Traitement Informatique de la Langue  Française).

FRANTEXT is a useful tool for analysing literary texts. Queries can be constructed in order to analyse the frequency of key words or phrases and to locate specific categories both within works and across works.

Searching tips:

In order to access all items in FRANTEXT, click on Corpus de travail and then Définir le corpus de travail. Leave the search box blank and click Enregistrer la selection to show the entire list of works.

To select texts to search, click on Corpus de travail and then Définir le corpus de travail.

Enter search terms (name, title or both) into the search box and click the Enregistrer la selection button to see the number of texts. To view details, click on Corpus de travail, then Visualiser le corpus de travail and then Affichage détaillé de la bibliographie.

The Documentation and Ressources didactiques tabs give comprehensive guides on utilising FRANTEXT  to the fullest.

What do you think about the McClay Library Enhancements?

During the summer 2013 extra study seats and PC spaces were added to the McClay Library by extending the ground floor. The Student Lounge was also extended with the addition of two new water fountains. We’d like to find out if these developments have improved your experience of the Library so we’d be grateful if you’d complete this short survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RPWZKSS

It only consists of 5 quick questions so shouldn’t take more than a minute to complete. Thanks for your help!
