New Springer Journal Deal Covers Article Processing Charges (APCs)

The Library has signed a new agreement with Springer that covers all APCs for articles published in Springer Open Choice journals. See eligible journal list here

This means that you do not need to pay Springer an APC to make your article open access in a Springer Open Choice journal as the Library has already paid for it as part of this new agreement.

To make sure that you are covered by this new agreement, when your article has been accepted for publication, Springer will ask you to confirm the following:

My article has been accepted by an Open Choice eligible journal

  • I am the corresponding author (please use your institutional email address not your personal one)
  • I am affiliated with an eligible UK institution (select your institutions name)
  • My article matches one of these types: OriginalPaper, ReviewPaper, BriefCommunication or ContinuingEducation

How much can I borrow? – You Said, We Did!

Last semester as part of the Book Availability Survey 2015, we asked you about

  • the number of books you could borrow
  • how long you could borrow them for
  • the number of times you could renew your books
  • 1 week loans

Thank you to everyone who responded and we have made the following changes or commitments.

Over 50% of undergraduate students agreed that the number of books that could be borrowed met their needs. However comments indicated that some students find 10 standard or 1 week loan books are not enough to cover their needs.
You said…you wanted to be able to borrow more books.
We…increased the number of books that an undergraduate can borrow from 10 to 15.

The same frustration was felt by Taught Postgraduate students.
We…increased the number of books that a taught postgraduate student can borrow from 20 to 25.

The vast majority of respondents felt that the length of time that an item could be borrowed for was adequate to meet their needs.
We…have made no change to this but will continue to keep it under review. Changes have been made to short loan material.

You said…that you were confused about the 1 week loan type.
We…will undertake a specific review of 1 week loans in 2015-16 to see how well they work.

Some dissatisfaction was identified with the number of renewals allowed.
You said…you wanted to be able to renew items more than 5 times.
We …cannot change this at this time but will continue to keep it under review. We will promote the reservation, recall and renewal system throughout 2015-16.

Further information on how much you can borrow can be found here.

Short Loan – NEW Loan Periods NEW Fine Rates [ You said, We did ]

Student Short Loan Survey 2015               The Outcome

Last Semester we carried out a major survey to find out what students think about the Short Loan Collection in The McClay Library.

We got a huge response and have taken onboard everything you said.                                    As a result of your feedback, we have made big changes to the loan periods and fines.

You asked for more convenient and flexible return times                                                       You dislike having to return books by 10 o’clock on a Monday morning                           We abolished specific return times                                                                                      All Short Loan books can now be returned at any time of the day or night on the due date.

You said fines accumulate too quickly                                                                                      You think the overdue charges are confusing                                                                                  We abolished the hourly fine rate                                                                                    The hourly fine rate has been replaced by a daily charge. The fine for the late return of all Short Loan items (1– Night, 2-Night and 7-Night) is now the same — £2.50 per item per day.

You asked for books in very heavy demand to be available for use only in the Library You said it’s difficult to get hold of recommended texts in time to meet deadlines          We created a Short Loan Reference category                                                                → A small number of books cannot be borrowed—they are only for use in the Short Loan area.

You said the 1-Night Loan period is too short                                                                           We discontinued 1-Night book loans                                                                                → The 1-Night books can now be borrowed for 3 days (2 nights).                                                Note that although DVDs and videos can only be borrowed for one night they may be returned at any time the following day.

Module reading lists requested

Library subject teams are now gathering information on books recommended in module readings lists for Semester 1. All readings lists will be checked for book availability whenever received by the Library. Please note, however, that for lists to be checked for availability and new book orders made in time for the start of the semester, lists will need to be received by Friday 11th September.

We would encourage staff who have not already done so, to send module reading lists as soon as possible to their subject librarian.
