Open Access Requirements for Horizon 2020-Funded Projects

Horizon 2020 grant holders “must provide open access (OA) to all peer-reviewed scientific publications that stem from project activities, immediately or otherwise within 6/12 months of publication where publisher embargoes apply. Non-compliance can lead to a grant reduction and potential sanctions”.

How to comply

Queen’s researchers can comply with the Horizon 2020 policy via Green or Gold open access.

Before submission, check that your publisher’s embargo on open access in a repository is no longer than 6 months (12 for Social Sciences and Humanities), or that there is a Gold open access option.

Green open access

To comply via the Green route, upload your accepted manuscript to Pure upon acceptance. Please be aware that the maximum embargo period allowed for Green open access is:

  • 6 months for STEM disciplines
  • 12 months for SSH disciplines

Gold open access

Gold open access is when the final published version of your article is immediately open access upon publication. Gold open access charges are eligible costs to Horizon 2020 grants, ‘Article processing charges’ are eligible for reimbursement during the duration of the project.

If you publish via the Gold route, please upload your final published version to Pure upon publication.
