24-HOUR OPENING

Twenty-four opening will run for six weeks this semester starting on Sunday 29 November.

During these weeks overnight study facilities will be available to Queen’s students in The Library at Queen’s from 9 o’clock on Sunday evenings and, from midnight on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Students have a choice of several study areas on the Ground Floor. PCs are available in the Extended Hours Room, the Atrium and the two Language Labs. Those who prefer a bit more work space to work (without a PC) should opt for the desks in the Short Loan area.  If you are looking for more comfortable chairs or just somewhere  to take a break, the Coffee Lounge will remain open throughout the night.

This overnight facility is for quiet study.  Please note that service desks will be closed and it will not be possible to borrow or return books, laptops or any other items including Short Loan material. Floors one to three will close at the normal time.  If you wish to borrow Short Loan material please remember to do so before 10 o’clock (5.30pm on Sundays) as the self service terminals will not be available during the extended hours.

The overnight study facility on the ground floor is provided to facilitate Queen’s students.  For all other library users the building closes at at midnight Monday to Thursday and at 9.00pm on Sundays.  Library staff will be carrying out spot checks after normal closing time so please ensure that you have your student card with you.  You will also need your card to enter and exit the library.

The overnight study facilities will not be available over the Christmas period (weeks beginning 21 and 28 December) but will restart on Sunday 3 January  and run for a further three weeks.

We are constantly looking at ways to improve the service and have taken your comments on board. Earlier this week we opened both language labs to provide extra seats. And, from Monday 14th December additional study space will be made available in the Short Loan area.

Following up some of the points raised in the posts, one serious concern which emerged is the number of non-QUB student using The Library at Queen’s. The extended hours and overnight study facility is intended solely for Queen’s students.

In fact, students who are studying at other universities or education colleges are not allowed into the Library at Queen’s during term-time.

Non-QUB students are admitted only during the vacation. Under the terms of the SCONUL Vacation Access Scheme, taught undergraduate and postgraduate students from other higher education institutions in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland area are allowed use the library for reference during the vacations. The scheme does not entitle students to borrow material or access electronic databases.

So, if seats intended for Queen’s students are being occupied by students from other local institutions, then some Queen’s student need to take heed that their student card is for personal use! It may not be shared with or used by anyone else, whether they are a Queen’s student or not. Disciplinary action may be taken in cases of misuse.
