Talk on “A Frequency-Invariant Approach to Energy-Efficient Computing” at HPC-Days 2026

Syed Tauhidi participated in the HPC Days 2026 conference at the beautiful Durham University, representing the Kelvin Living Lab. It was an incredible week for the UK supercomputing community, and an amazing chance to catch up on what colleagues across the UK are working on.

During the event, Syed presented his research on making HPCs much more eco-friendly. Right now, global data centres are on track to use more electricity than entire countries like Japan or Canada, and a shocking amount of that power is wasted when processors are just “spinning their wheels” waiting for data to load. Syed introduced URJA, a software tool being worked on at the Kelvin Living Lab that automatically dials down a computer’s power when it doesn’t need to run at full speed. It can save up to 29% energy on certain tasks without requiring developers to change a single line of their code or disrupt their work. It was incredibly rewarding to share this step toward greener computing with such a welcoming crowd!

The slides from his presentation are as follows.
