Open Access Publisher memberships

The Library has recently acquired open access memberships to various publishers to help Queen’s research staff with payment of open access publication fees. Memberships include:

BioMed Central Pre-pay Membership, Limited funding is available to pay full publishing costs of articles authored by Queen’s researchers and published by BioMed Central.

Royal Society Open Access Institutional Membership entitles Queen’s research staff and students to a 25% discount on article processing charges (APCs) for open access publications in any of the Royal Society’s journals.

PLOS (Public Library of Science) Institutional Membership, this membership is pending.  Queen’s researchers will be entitled to a 10% discount on publication fees in all PLOS journals.

New improved Construction Information Service

Our access to the Construction Information Service just got even better with the addition, until May 2013, of the Sustainability, Environment, Development & Planning Supplement.

CIS already provided users with a comprehensive range of full-text documents covering all aspects of the building, engineering, design and construction processes; now our subscription also includes guidance, legislation, circulars, advice notes and statistics for those involved in sustainable development and management, environmental planning, climate change, town and country planning, developing sustainable communities and conservation.

Prizes for our Twitter Followers and Facebook Likes!

The Library is nearly at 2750 followers on Twitter and 500 Likes on Facebook. To celebrate these milestones and thank everyone for supporting our accounts, we are giving away No Alibis Bookstore vouchers.

Once we reach 2750 followers and 500 Likes we will randomly select one person from our Twitter followers and one person from our Facebook Likes to each win a £20 No Alibis voucher.  The winners must be a current member of the Library at Queen’s and will be notified via a direct message (Twitter) or private message (Facebook).  If a winner does not respond within 48 hours, a second winner will be chosen at random.

Scopus Hands-on Training Course

Scopus (http://www.scopus.com) is the world’s largest bibliographic and citation database and will be the source of the citation data used by some of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment panels. The aim of this course, which is designed for research staff and research postgraduates, is to provide an overview of Scopus. It will be delivered by Michaela Kurschildgen who is a trainer from Elsevier.

Under the new RSC Gold deal, we now have access to all journals published by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The new titles which have been added to our subscription are:

You can access them by going to the Library catalogue http://encore.qub.ac.uk/iii/encore_qub/ and searching for RSC journals. This will link you to the RSC journals site where you can browse for the journal you want.

The Collected Letters of W. B. Yeats. Electronic edition – Trial Access Now Available

Staff and students have trial access to The Collected Letters of W. B. Yeats. Electronic edition until 14/107/2012.  You can access it (on-campus only) from the following URL: http://trial.nlx.com

The InteLex electronic edition of The Collected Letters of W. B. Yeats includes all of the known letters of the great Irish poet, dramatist and statesman. Most appear here for the first time.

19th Century UK Periodicals Series 2: Empire – Now Available

The library’s new subscription to 19th Century UK Periodicals Series 2: Empire is now active.  QUB staff and students can access it by via our existing link to Series 1 (you can then either cross search both or select an individual database): Click here to access

Series 2 covers the expansion of the Empire, addressing the economic as well as the non-mercantile aspects of British expansionism. It provides rare access to important primary source materials from various locations throughout the British Empire with diverse perspectives on power, information networks, governmental theory and cultural transmission.

This series draws from the remarkable collections of the British Library, National Library of Scotland, National Library of Australia and National Library of South Africa, titles include Capital and Labour, Liberty Review, The Canadian Journal, The Friend of India, The Asiatic Review and Colonial Chronicle.

New Library Database: SCOPUS

The Library now has a subscription to SCOPUS which is the world’s largest bibliographic and citation database. It covers nearly 20,000 academic journals from a wide range of subjects and dates from 1996 to the present. SCOPUS will also be the source of the citation data which will be used by some of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment panels.

SCOPUS can be accessed, both on and off campus, via QCat.  As well as carrying out literature searches, you can set up current awareness alerts, view citation counts, determine your h-index and assess the quality of journal titles.  SCOPUS is part of the SciVerse suite of resources which is produced by Elsevier and includes the ScienceDirect electronic journals service.
