Medical and HSC Library Opening Hours Survey – You Said, We Did

Thank you to everyone who responded to the Medical and HSC Library Opening Hours Survey 2017. The survey ran from 25 April to 19 May and its focus was to gauge opinion about the opening hours and whether they met the needs of our users. The survey attracted a response rate of 5%. Comments and feedback received have been analysed by library staff and we have identified some areas where we thought it would be useful to respond:

Electrical sockets

Further to your feedback requesting more electrical sockets in the Medical Library, these are now available throughout the Fry Room.

Location, parking and transport

The Medical and HSC Library is located in the Mulhouse Building on the Royal Victoria Hospital site. While on site car parking is controlled by Car Parking Services and therefore out of our control, there is a free shuttle bus service running regularly between the Belfast City Hospital site and the Royal Victoria Hospital site.

Extended opening at exam time

The Medical and HSC Library strives to offer students and other users the best customer service possible. During exam times, extended 24 hour opening is available to all library users in the McClay Library.

Using Trust logins in the Medical and HSC Library

As Hospital Trusts process and transmit personal and confidential patient data and commercially sensitive information, access to their networks must be strictly controlled and they are not able to facilitate Trust Logins from the Medical and HSC Library site.

Restriction in the use of the RCUK Open Access Block Grant.

Due to increased demand for ‘gold’ open access and a significant reduction in the University’s RCUK open access block grant allocation, the Open Access Team has introduced a restriction on the use of the fund for the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs).

The Open Access Team has ring-fenced the remaining allocation for the following types of costs:

  • APCs for fully Open Access journals (i.e., journals which do not sell subscriptions and in which all articles are Open Access, e.g., BioMed Central, PLOS One, Nature Communications)
  • APCs for journals that do not offer a Green Open Access option that complies with RCUK’s Open Access policy

In most cases it is possible for RCUK funded authors to comply with its Open Access policy by making papers Green Open Access (i.e., uploading your Accepted Manuscript to Pure which will be made freely available after a specified embargo period).

The restriction in use of the block grant will commence from the 1st June 2017 onwards.

If you have any questions regarding this restriction please email openaccess@qub.ac.uk

For further information on ‘gold’ open access funding please visit the Open Access webpages.

Desks in high demand

Desks cannot be left unattended for more than 30 minutes. RESPECT others need for a study space

Blogimagered

Reserving seats:

You can leave your desk for up to 30 minutes.

Use slips available at the enquiry desk so other users and staff know when you left.

If you have not returned after 30 minutes your belongings can be moved to one side so another person can use the desk.

Looking for a seat:

If you can’t find an unoccupied seat Library staff will be able to tell you if any are available and where they might be.

If an owner does not return to a seat after 30 minutes you can occupy the study space by carefully putting items to one side for the owner to collect later.

Library staff support your need for a space so just tell us if the returning student complains.
