Primary sources: an introduction for history students

What do we mean by primary sources? Why are they important for students of history? How do you find them at Queen’s?

During this brand new course Deborah Sherlock (Subject Librarian, HAPP) and Louisa Costelloe (Assistant Librarian, Special Collections) will take you through what to expect (and how to avoid pitfalls) when dealing with primary sources. We will look at key issues such as navigating Special Collections at Queen’s, using primary sources databases, evaluating sources and citing primary sources in your academic work.

There is a wealth of primary source material available to students at Queen’s that we want you to access easily and feel confident exploring.

The course will run in the McClay Library on Thursday 28th February 2.30-4.00pm and Thursday 7th March 9.30-11.00am . Spaces are limited so booking is essential. Please reserve your place here.

Restriction on the use of the RCUK Open Access Block Grant.

The University’s RCUK Open Access Block Grant for 2018/19 is almost exhausted. The Open Access Team has therefore had to introduce a restriction on the use of the fund for the payment of Article Processing Charges (APCs).

The Open Access Team has ring-fenced the remaining allocation to pay APCs for fully Open Access journals only (i.e., journals where an APC is mandatory and not optional).

In most cases it is possible for RCUK funded authors to comply with its Open Access policy by making papers Green Open Access (i.e., uploading your Accepted Manuscript to Pure which will be made freely available after a specified embargo period).

The restriction in the use of the block grant will commence from the 4th February 2019 onwards.

Medical Library Videos

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences has teamed up with Richard Fallis, Subject Librarian for those subjects, to produce a series of short videos, covering everything from getting to the Medical Library at the Royal Victoria Hospital, to running a literature search in the MEDLINE database.

QUB medical students can access the videos by logging into the Medical Education Portal and clicking the ‘Library video tutorials’ link:

Library Systems – Scheduled Maintenance 16/01/19

Library Systems will be carrying out some essential maintenance on our catalogue search on 16th January 2019.

The catalogue will be unavailable from 10:00 pm (GMT) on 16th January for approximately 4 hours. My Account will be unavailable and it will not be possible to borrow or renew books during this time.

During this time our article search will continue to be available from the library home page.

Databases can still be accessed from our A – Z list.

The McClay Library Expansion Project – January 2019 Update

This is the latest in a series of regular updates planned for the 2018-19 academic year which will keep you informed on progress of the McClay Library Phase 3 expansion project.

The project is progressing well with most of the work currently concentrated in the area which is being extended outside Short Loan and in the courtyard area behind Borrower Services.

The Language Teaching Room has now relocated from the bottom of the atrium to the old Auditorium, Room 0G 028 (turn left after lifts/toilet block on entering the ground floor). The Language Resource Room remains in its former location.

No particularly disruptive work in the main Library area is anticipated over the next few weeks and anything likely to cause a disturbance will be carried out as early in the morning as possible. However, due to the major works that are being undertaken there may be some background noise.

Research Data Survey

Academic and research staff at Queen’s have been emailed the link to an online survey about research data, which is being conducted by Information Services.  This Questback survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete and all responses will be anonymous.

The aim is to help Information Services investigate research data practices at Queen’s. This will enable us to meet the needs of researchers by quantifying the scale of the technical infrastructure that is required, identifying any training needs, and determining the level of advice and support that should be provided.

Research data is defined as “that which is collected, observed, or created in a digital form, for purposes of analysing to produce original research results”.  Even if you do not consider that you hold research data we would still appreciate your input.

Information Services will donate £1 to Macmillan Cancer Support each time a member of staff completes the survey.

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works, Volume1 and Volume 2.

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works, Volume1 and Volume 2.

This is a “searchable collection containing real transcripts of counseling and therapy sessions and first-person narratives illuminating the experience of mental illness and treatment, as well as reference works to contextualize the primary material. The database contains more than 2,000 session transcripts, 44,000 pages of client narratives, and 25,000 pages of secondary reference material.”

At present the volumes are accessed via different platforms so the links are unique for each volume as follows.

This trial runs until February 7th 2019. It is available both on and off campus during this time. While the Library is not in a position to establish a subscription at present, your feedback welcome in order to gain clarity on the value of the database to research / teaching and of exploring future funding options.
