Periodicals Archive Online – Trial Access

QUB staff and students can access ProQuest’s Periodicals Archive Online until 10/10/2013 from here.

Periodicals Archive Online is a major archive that makes the backfiles of scholarly periodicals in the arts, humanities and social sciences available electronically, providing access to the searchable full text of hundreds of titles. The database spans more than two centuries of content, 37 key subject areas, and multiple languages.

Electronic Enlightenment now available

Electronic Enlightenment is now available to QUB staff and students.

As of summer 2013 Electronic Enlightenment contains 63,967 letters and documents and 8,002 correspondents, Electronic Enlightenment is the most wide-ranging online collection of edited correspondence of the early modern period, linking people across Europe, the Americas and Asia from the early 17th to the mid-19th century.

The McClay Library Enhancement Project 2013

Work on this project has proceeded according to schedule and will be substantially completed by Friday 6 September.

Work in the atrium (with furniture installed and wiring in place) will be completed by Tuesday 3 September; installation of PCs will commence in this area on Wednesday 4 September.  Students will have full access to the atrium, including the new reading rooms, from Monday 9 September. However, please note that commissioning of PCs in the atrium will continue over the next couple of weeks. All the PCs in the Extended Hours Reading Room will also be replaced by Friday 20 September.

Re-development of the student lounge is almost completed; new furniture and water coolers will be installed by Wednesday 4 September. Students will have full access to this area from Thursday 5 September.

The new toilets on the ground floor are likely to open by Friday 6 September.

Some minor work to install student seating in place of journal display shelving on floors 2 and 3 should also be completed by Friday 6 September. The furniture will be installed in these areas before the beginning of term. Commissioning of new PCs on floor 1 will be completed by Wednesday 4 September.

There will be some painting work across the floors over the next couple of weeks but this should be completed by 15 September.

International & Postgraduate Student Centre

Postgraduate students should note that the International & Postgraduate Student Centre will offer exceptional summer opening between 10.00am to 5:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays between Saturday 20 July and Sunday 15 September. This facility is being made available on a temporary basis to offer alternative study options for postgraduate students during the McClay Library Enhancement Project.

Researchers’ Survey March 2013: You Said, We Did!

In March 2013 we conducted a researchers’ survey covering areas such as electronic resources, reference management, open access (OA), and communication and training. There were 326 responses (114 research staff and 212 students) from all schools.  As a result we have made a number of service improvements:

  • A mobile version of QCat Discover is now available
  • An alphabetical list of ejournals will be launched during the summer
  • Two potential alternatives to QCat Discover will be trialled this autumn
  • A large number of new journal subscriptions have been purchased and will be available in January 2014. These include package deals for:
    • Duke University Press
    • JSTOR – 6 extra collections
    • Oxford University Press
    • Springer
    • Taylor & Francis
  • The following new, full-text electronic resources are now available:
    • Financial Times Historical Archive 1888-2009
    • IEEE-Wiley eBooks
    • A selection of Oxford University Press Medical Handbooks and Textbooks
    • Nineteenth Century Collections Online – British Politics and Society
    • RCS eBook collection (1968-2012)
    • Wiley Blackwell Psychology Collection
  • We aim to introduce training courses covering bibliometrics, conducting literature searches for systematic reviews, and open access
  • The range of YouTube videos will be extended to cover topics such as accessing electronic resources off campus and searching for journal articles using QCat Discover
  • A QCat Discover search box is now available on the LibGuides homepage
  • There are plans to increase the number of LibGuides targeted at researchers
  • We aim to assess EndNote and Mendeley and are assessing RefWorks Flow (the new version of the RefWorks service)

Springer Protocols now available

Springer Protocols is an extensive online collection of molecular biology and biomedical protocols enabling researchers to recreate experiments in their laboratory. They provide predefined written procedural methods in the design and implementation of experiments including bias, safety, equipment, statistical methods and reporting. The Protocols are taken from established sources such as Methods in Molecular Biology, Methods in Biotechnology and Methods in Molecular Medicine.

Nineteenth Century Collections Online: British Politics & Society – Now Available

Nineteenth Century Collections Online: British Politics & Society is now available to QUB staff and students from here or via QCat.

This resource includes tens of thousands of historical primary sources relating to the social and political climate in Great Britain during the “long” nineteenth century, and consists of more than 1.7 million pages. The collections are sourced from a variety of institutions, including the British Library and The National Archives, Kew.

With British Politics and Society, scholars can research and explore a range of primary sources covering such topics as British domestic and foreign policy, the working class, trade unions, Chartism, Owenism, public protest, radical movements, the cartographic record, political reform, education, family relationships, religion, and leisure.
