Canvas is Queen’s new, University-wide Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which will be officially adopted across all Schools in AY 2019/20, replacing the current VLE provided through Queen’s Online (QOL).  If you haven’t had the opportunity to avail of Canvas training this year, it’s not too late to book a sessions ahead of the September rush. Don’t be left with a blank Canvas at start of term, a full programme of training is available throughout August and September to help you to develop your modules in preparation for teaching in September. A description of 7 key training and support activities available to all staff is outlined below.


1. Ready, Steady… Canvas! Virtual Sessions

Ready Steady…Canvas! This 45-minute online session will be a step-by-step on the basics of getting a course ready for the first week of the semester during which you can interact and ask questions. We are running daily sessions next week all running 09:00-9:45. Click the link below to view and register for a session. You can then follow along from the comfort of your office!


2. Get Ready – GO LIVE!

Short virtual Lunchtime session will run from 13:15-14:00 with time for Q&A at the end. This is a follow-on session from Ready, Steady..Canvas! These focused lunchtime sessions will deliver key information to help you put the finishing touches to your module in time for Semester 1. Why not grab a coffee and join us online from the comfort of your office.

This 45 minute virtual session is a follow on course from Ready, Steady..Canvas! and will cover:

  • Setting up and managing student groups and sections
  • Setting up a Turnitin assignment
  • Course settings
  • Validate your links
  • Publish your course

3. Canvas Surgery

Visit your Canvas Surgery for step-by-step guidance on how to build your module in Canvas. If dates/times for venues advertised within your Faculty do not suit, please feel free to come along to ANY of the dates/times offered across campus.

From Monday 26 August until the end of September, you can attend any Faculty-based Canvas Surgery to participate in a guided module build session(s).  Build demo sessions will run in parallel so you can choose a time that suits your availability.  Pre-registration is not necessary as places will be offered on a first come first served basis to meet demand.  Sessions run every hour so drop in any time. Add your name to the sign-up sheet for session(s) running every hour. 

Due to demand, the Canvas Surgery running Mon 23 – Weds 25 Sept [10:00-16:00] will run as open sessions for staff to come along and get face-to-face support. Drop-in to avail of support on finalising your Canvas Course or book a one-to-one for tailored support. These sessions will be hosted in the Canvas Training Room (3rd Floor, 92 Lisburn Road).

PLEASE NOTE: In order for the Surgery Sessions to be of benefit to you, please bring a laptop device so that you can build your module with some hand-on support and advice from your Instructor.

4. Canvas Building Blocks

Building Blocks are one-hour, highly focused Canvas training sessions which focus on building skills required to create an engaging course in Canvas.  Face-to-face workshops will also be streamed online so you can join us from the comfort of your office or home. 

Choose from any combination of building blocks to suit your needs. Blocks cover topics ranging from assessment, communication and content building tools with a how-to focus. Come prepared to ask questions, engage in practice activities and discover how to successfully leverage Canvas to enhance and support instructional practices.

6. Canvas for Support Staff

Learn how to use the VLE to manage and support the delivery of academic modules in Canvas. Tools and features which help to facilitate communication of information to students, file and content management, managing assignments, grades and student feedback will also be covered.

This practical workshop will introduce you to the Canvas VLE and give an overview of its functionality, in particular the tools and features that can be used to manage and support the delivery and administration of a Queen’s academic module. Canvas user roles and permissions will also be covered.

7. Guided 1-2-1 Support Sessions
