In July 2026, the Hexi Corridor Photography Exhibition, featuring works by artist Ni Yang and curated by Eutopia Arthouse Film Festival, was presented at The MAC in Belfast. Through photographs of the region’s natural landscapes and cultural surroundings, the exhibition invited audiences to encounter a place shaped by centuries of movement, exchange and change, exploring the relationship between land, memory and the passage of time.

As Yang writes:

“The Hexi Corridor lies in northwest China, now within Gansu province.

Bordered by the Badain Jaran Desert to the north and the Qilian Mountains to the south, west of the Yellow River, it has long connected the Central Plains with the Western Regions.

Before arrival, this land exists in the form of narration. It belongs to history, and to imagination.

Things appear, then fade; traces remain, then are covered. There are no clear boundaries, and few endings.”

Presented as an accompanying visual arts exhibition within the programme of the 3rd Eutopia Arthouse Film Festival, the exhibition enriched the festival’s artistic offering and extended its exploration of visual storytelling to the ancient landscapes of China. Through the Hexi Corridor—a historic crossroads of cultures and civilisations—it brought audiences in Belfast closer to the landscapes and cultural memory of northwest China, opening a space for dialogue across geography, history and artistic forms.
