Theme: Simplifying Online Teaching

The Digital Learning Teams from across the institution facilitate monthly Show & Tell webinars, where staff are invited to share their own experiences of online and blended teaching.  The Online Teaching Show & Tell series kicked off in 2021 with the theme of Simplifying Online Teaching’. On Thursday 21st January Digital Learning teams from across the institution hosted this event, predominantly for anyone who was new to Queen’s or those starting to teach in the Connected Learning environment from Semester 2. In fact, the event was very encouraging and there was something for everyone, regardless of comfort-level with Online Teaching. The following colleagues were invited to share their own experiences of online and blended teaching:

Session Highlights

Dr. Elaine Farrell (HAPP) enjoys using innovative techniques in her own teaching, however, she also recognises the importance of Simplifying Online Teaching. Many find online teaching daunting and overwhelming, but Elaine is a big believer that it does not have to be complicated. In this session, aimed at those new to or struggling with online teaching, Elaine shared 10 simple ways to engage students and facilitate interaction.

Dr. Sharon-Eddie Parkinson (MDBS) uses a simple, but effective technique to break down Canvas content using Emojis. Sharon presented how publicly available Emojis can be used to spruce up your Canvas pages, not only to make them more aesthetically appealing, but also to improve visibility of content for students.

Dr. Lisa Bradley (QMS) shared some of her experiences of simplifying teaching and feedback. She shared, by method of conversation, how she overcame initial reservations of moving to the online teaching and Connected Learning environment by going right back to basics.
