Embedding Panopto Videos in Canvas

Panopto is fully integrated with Canvas VLE. Each Canvas course has its own dedicated Panopto folder, accessible via the Panopto Video link in the course navigation menu.

Students can access videos directly through this folder which is helpful for revision. However, it is recommended to embed videos within relevant Canvas pages (inc. discussions, quizzes, surveys, assignments, and announcements if relevant). Embedding videos improves accessibility and reduces the need for students to search for your videos.

Follow these steps to embed Panopto videos correctly on Canvas.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Important: You must follow these steps to embed Panopto videos correctly. Do not try to embed Panopto videos any other way as this can result in access issues for students.

  1. Navigate to the Canvas page where you want the video to appear.
  2. Click Edit (top-right) to open the Rich Content Editor.
  3. Place your cursor at the point where you want the video to be embedded.
  4. Now click on the green Panopto icon in the toolbar Panopto icon

A window will appear with three options: Choose, Upload, Record.

  • Choose: Select a video which you’ve already created/uploaded to Panopto.
  • Upload: Upload a video from your device.
  • Record: Record a new video.
  1. Select the video from the list by clicking the radio button to the left of it.

  1. Use the upward arrow to confirm your preferred embed settings. For example, you can determine how interactive you want the video to be. Learn more about video embed options.

  1. Click Insert and then Save the Canvas page once you are finished editing it. The video will now appear on your Canvas page.

💡Tip: By default, when you embed a video in Canvas you’ll only see videos from the folder linked to that course. If you want to embed a video from another Panopto folder (for example, My Folder), use the drop-down menu to switch folders.

  1. Drag and drop your video file into the upload box, or click the box to locate it on your device.

  1. The file will upload (green progress bar) and then start to process.

  1. Once processing is complete (green tick), choose your preferred embed settings by clicking on the upward arrow.
  2. Click Insert and then Save the Canvas page once you are finished editing it. The video will now appear on your Canvas page.
  1. Enter a clear title for your video (Panopto defaults to current date and time).

  1. Select your recording method:

Note: The app is pre-installed on all centrally bookable teaching room PCs and is the default for lecture recording. You only need to download it if you want to use it on your own device. Alternatively, use Panopto Capture without needing to download anything.

  1. Record your video.
  2. Choose your preferred embed settings by clicking on the upward arrow.
  3. Click Insert and then Save the Canvas page once you are finished editing it. The video will now appear on your Canvas page.

Once your video is embedded, students will be able to watch it when they visit the Canvas page. Depending on the interactivity level you chose in the video embed options, they may be able to interact with the video via discussion comments, notes, bookmarks and smart searching. Learn more about interactivity features here.
