Professor Schiek was quoted in “Le Monde” on the basis of the CETLS/TREUP occasional paper “Hard Brexit“. She explained that, concerning the future border between Northern Ireland and Ireland after the UK withdraws from the EU, a return of the borders of the past is unlikely given advancements in electronic border control. However, the question on the future of this borders as an external border of the EU will have to draw a delicate balance between the identities of those identifying as Irish and those identifying with the Union of the UK, while both these identities are equally protected by the Belfast Agreement.
