4 Things to Try this New Year

As we begin a brand-new year, you may have some resolutions which involve trying something new, meeting new people, or pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.

This is the perfect time to level-up your university experience by getting involved in the heartbeat of student life – your Students’ Union!

Beyond studying at the McClay and attending lectures, is a space for students to explore new possibilities and new opportunities.

In this blog, we’ll look at just some of the ways you can dive into a range of student activities, make a lasting impact, and shape your academic journey into an unforgettable one.

1. Discover a new Hobby

The SU has a wide variety of diverse clubs, societies, and initiatives. Whether you’re interested in sport, arts, gaming, socialising or something unique, there’s a place for you.

If you’d like to invest more time in one of your hobbies (or maybe embark on a new one!), we’d suggest kicking off the semester with a trip to our Refreshers’ Fair on Wednesday the 14th of January in Mandela Hall, to meet some of our amazing clubs and societies. This is a great space to explore your options and find what fits you.

Make this year all about discovering and nurturing your passion! You can also check out our A-Z of clubs and societies to see everything we have on offer. From the Snow Sports Club and Underwater Hockey, to Queen’s Radio or Writers’ Society – we’ve got something for everyone!

2. Run for a Leadership Position

Is the beginning of a new-year your sign to step into a new role of leadership? Are you eager to enhance your CV with experience that will empower you to influence positive change at Queen’s and beyond?

Well you’re in luck, as nominations are now open for the SU Elections! Our Full-Time, Paid Student Officer roles will help you develop essential leadership skills and provide the training to give you the confidence you need to represent the Student Body of Queen’s. It’s not just about what you can gain; it’s about what you can contribute.

We also have a range of part-time voluntary roles such as Student Association Chairs, Undergrad Reps and Faculty Reps.

Find out more here and put yourself forward by 5pm on Thursday 22nd of January!

3. Give Back

Volunteering comes with a lot of unexpected benefits – not only do you get that feel good factor from doing something positive for others, but it can also lower your stress, anger and anxiety levels, improve your self confidence, and even advance your career aspects by teaching you valuable job skills – alongside meeting lots of new people!

Applications are still open for our Homework Clubs Programme, which connects student volunteers with children and young people in areas of educational underachievement, providing crucial homework support.

If you’d prefer a more casual volunteering role then our Handy Helpers Programme is for you! From community gardening to decorating charity premises, you can pick and choose what you want to take part in, allowing you to gain experience in various settings while actively contributing to the local community.

By volunteering you’ll be registered to record volunteering hours to achieve the Prestige Volunteer Certificate, alongside being eligible to apply for a Queen’s Future Ready Award!

4. Develop Your Business

Are you ready to take your business to the next level? Why not take part in this year’s Dragons’ Den competition and elevate your entrepreneurial journey!

Network and connect with industry leaders, ramp up your business skills with insights from successful entrepreneur and stand a chance to win a share of our £25,000 prize pot to fuel your business launch!

Applications are now open, and will close at 5pm, Mon 16 Feb! Find out more here.
