Celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month

LGBTQ+ History Month is a celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and non-binary history.

The annual celebration recognises the abolition of Section 28, a UK law that deprived generations of LGBTQ+ students the opportunity to see people like them in books, on screens or on stage.

This February, there are plenty of ways to mark the month.

Queer Lectures

The Students’ Union in collaboration with the Pride Society are hosting a line up of queer lectures. Subjects include ‘The Queer History of Belfast’ by Dr Tom Hulme and ‘Weaponising how annoying you are to do some good’ by queer activist and co-organiser of Trans Pride Dublin, Jenny Maguire.

The event is free to attend with no booking required and will take place in the SU Blue Sky Room between 3pm – 5pm on Tues 13 Feb.

Movie Screening: But I’m A Cheerleader!

The Naughton Gallery and UsFolk have partnered with PRISM, Queen’s University’s LGBT+ Staff Network, to present 90’s cult classic But I’m a Cheerleader at QFT. All attendees will receive a free specially-commissioned poster from Belfast-based illustrator Jacky Sheridan.

The satire stars Natasha Lyonne as the cheerleader whose parents suspect she might be a lesbian and is sent to a conversion therapy camp. The film is loosely based on director Jamie Babbit’s own experiences.

The film is showing at 6:20pm, 16 Feb at QFT. Tickets are available here

Movie Screening: Pride

That’s the basis of the free film screening of Pride (2014) at QFT later this month. Based on true events, this uplifting film tells the poignant story of an alliance between an LGBT community and mining communities during the 1984 miners’ strike in Thatcher’s Britain.

The Independent called it …”an uplifting film about humanity and kindness and what can be achieved through a hearty dosage of passion, guts and empathy.”

Reserve a seat for the showing at 6pm, Thurs 29 Feb in QFT here.

Get involved with the Pride Society

The Pride Society has a wonderful line up of events in Feb, including the screening of queer documentaries every Thursday, support groups and games nights. Check out the February calendar of events on the QUB Pride Instagram.

We hope everyone has a wonderful LGBTQ+ History Month!
