🔑 Key Assistive Technology Tools
Text-to-Speech (TTS) Tools
- Read&Write – Supports reading, writing, and organisation. Includes text-to-speech, word prediction, dictionary, and screen masking tools to reduce cognitive load.
🖥️ Available on all QUB-managed computers and browsers (Chrome and Edge) by default.
💻 Students can install the Chrome or Edge extension on personal devices and log in with their QUB email for full access.
👉 Guide to Read&Write - Immersive Readers: Built-in tools in Microsoft (Word, OneNote, Edge), Google (Docs), Apple (iOS and macOS), and PDF Reader in Microsoft Edge that support reading with features like text-to-speech, line focus, grammar highlighting, and text customisation.
Also available in Google Docs and Apple devices via Reader View.
👉 Great for students who benefit from simplified layouts or auditory support while reading.
Spelling, Grammar, and Writing Support
- Microsoft Editor – Built into Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Edge). Offers grammar, clarity, and style suggestions, accessible via the Review tab or browser extension.
- Grammarly (Free) – Checks spelling, punctuation, tone, and sentence structure in real-time.
- Scholarcy – AI-powered article summariser that helps students break down research papers and identify key points quickly.
👉 Available to QUB students via temporary interim licence on request.
Mind Mapping and Organisation Tools
- MindView – Helps students visually organise ideas, plan essays, or structure assignments.
🧠 Available as an interim 3-month licence for DSA applicants or students not eligible for DSA. - Free Alternatives: Coggle, MindMeister, and Microsoft OneNote.

Speech-to-Text and Dictation Tools
- Otter.ai (Limited Free Plan) – Records and transcribes meetings, tutorials, and lectures.
- Built-in Dictation:
- Windows – Press Win + H
- Mac – Use Fn key or Command + D
- Mobile (iOS/Android) – Speech-to-text via keyboard mic
- Voice Typing in Google Docs – Free and simple option for transcribing ideas quickly.
Note-taking and Lecture Organisation
- Microsoft OneNote – A digital notebook for all lecture notes, screenshots, voice recordings, and PDFs. Syncs automatically across devices.

- Focus Keeper: Assist with time management, helping students work in focused intervals with breaks.
- Focus Modes (Apple) / Focus Assist (Windows) – Reduce digital distractions and create dedicated study sessions.
- Pomodoro-style apps like Focus Keeper or Forest – Encourage time-blocked study sessions with built-in breaks.
- Microsoft To Do – Integrated task management tool ideal for breaking down deadlines and goals.
Study Skills and Organisation
- Study Skills Booklet: Offers suggested AT and software that caters to diverse learning needs, including planning and revision strategies.
- LDS Transition Skills for University (Canvas): Offers guidance on managing the shift to university life, study strategies, and resilience-building, with practical tips on academic and personal development.
- E-learning Transition Skills (Canvas): Provides online modules designed to help students develop essential academic skills.
Although these Canvas modules are accessed directly by students, they can be valuable exercises to work through together during tutoring sessions.

- Session Planning Guide for Support Providers: Provides practical advice on structuring and planning effective support sessions with students, ensuring a consistent and impactful approach.

Wellbeing and Mental Health Support
- QUB Student Wellbeing Service: First point of contact for students needing mental health support beyond academic tutoring.
- QUB Inspire Counselling Service: 24/7 Student Helpline. All students at the University can contact Inspire’s Student Helpline, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The number is 0808 800 0016 (24hr Freephone)
Practical Tips for Tutors
- Set Clear Expectations: Use visual aids and written instructions to complement verbal explanations.
