Fracking – 14:15-15:30, Wednesday 20th of August. University of Ulster Belfast Campus, York Street – Room 82D.23.3.

The QUB Environmental Law and Policy Reading Group is pleased to announce that our next session will be hosted at Ulster University (UU). The group will meet on Wednesday 20th of August at UU’s Belfast campus, where the session will be hosted chiefly by our UU friends and colleagues. Regarding the session’s reading material, please read the two short papers attached to this notice, which will form the basis of the discussion.

Meeting Place: UU Belfast Campus, York Street (beside Saint Anne’s Cathedral).

Meeting Room: Room 82D.23.3 (either proceed to room, or ask directions at reception).

Time: 14:15-15:30, on Wednesday 20th of August.

Topic: Fracking

Texts for discussion:

—Heather Ritchie, Greg Lloyd, Philip Griffiths – A fracking good time
—Rob Hopkins – 6 reasons why there is no community in fracking

Tea, coffee and sandwiches will be kindly provided by UU.

The subject of this session will be FRACKING, that is, the practice of hydraulically fracturing rock in order to obtain natural gas. This is a very topical subject in Northern Ireland at the present time, as the Devolved Administration has recently approved exploratory drilling for shale gas and various campaign groups have recently sprung up to resist fracking in the
province as a consequence.

The session offers Queen’s students and staff the opportunity to meet up with their peers at UU, to learn from them, and to exchange ideas in a friendly, collaborative environment. One of the two selected articles was produced by three UU lecturers, at least one of whom will be in attendance. The gathering is open to everyone, and it is likely to be of most particular interest to staff and postgraduate students with a passion for / background in environmental policy and law.

The venue is about a 15 minute walk from Queen’s. Thomas Muinzer will be meeting some attendees at the front doors of the School of Law (University Square, Houses 27-30) at 1:30 on the day of the session and walking into town, so those who are unsure of the location please feel free to meet up with this group at the doors and wander into town.

Any questions, please email Thomas – tmuinzer01@qub.ac.uk.
