An SU Guide to Belfast Pride

In June 1991, approximately 100 people walked through the streets of Belfast, marking the City’s very first Pride parade.

Belfast has come a long way since then. Last year over 75,000 people attended the parade, and organisers hope to break the record again this year. Festivities kick off this Fri 19 July until Sun 28 July, with over 150 events across 10 days.

Here’s how you can get involved:

March in the Parade or Support from the Sidelines

The 2024 parade kicks off at 1pm on Sat 27th July. The parade starts at Custom House Square and ends at Victoria Street. You can find the parade route here.

If you fancy a free breakfast and would like to march in the parade, join your Student Officers at NUS USI’s annual rainbow breakfast, where you can expect a free breakfast, face paints, flags and lots of pride accessories. As a group, you’ll then head to the march to walk in the parade.

The breakfast takes place at 10am, 27th July at McHughs Basement Bar. Spaces are limited so register here to avoid disappointment.

Test your knowledge at The Big Gay Quiz

After last year’s sold out event, The Rainbow Project’s annual Belfast Pride week fundraiser THE BIG GAY QUIZ is back bigger and better on Thurs 25th July in the Union Bar at Queen’s Students’ Union, supported by Taboo.

Huge prizes, tough questions and great craic delivered by your amazing quiz hosts Deci & Misty Falls! Book tickets here.

Join a Sign & Banner Making Session

Pride is a protest and what would a protest be without a banner? Join our Student Officers in collaboration with the Pride Society to make a banner to bring to the march. If you’re looking for some inspiration, head to Ulster Museum and check out the LGBTQ+ collection, with items dating back to Belfast’s first pride in 1991 on display.

Speak to Party Representatives

Pride Talks Back invites Northern Ireland’s party representatives to answer your questions on issues impacting the LGBTQIA+ community.

The event from Belfast Pride will be hosted by the BBC’s William Crawley at 7pm, Tuesday 23rd July at The MAC, Belfast.

You can submit your question to the panel in advance of the event here.

Attend Queen’s Pride Picnic

Students are invited to the third annual Queen’s Pride Picnic on Wed 24 July from 12.00pm to 3.00pm. Pride on campus will be celebrated with music, entertainment, food trucks, drinks, and an ice-cream cart for all staff and students to enjoy. This event is free to attend.

We hope you have fantastic Belfast Pride!
