  • Problem accessing e-Resources

This problem has now been resolved (12.30 pm, 23rd April 2014).

There is currently a problem with access to IP authenticated resources via honni. The only resources which are accessible are Clinical Key and Zetoc. We are investigating this problem as a matter of urgency and it will be resolved as quickly as possible.

We will update this news item as soon as more information is available.

  • Library support: when, where, how? A short survey

This survey is now closed.  The results will be posted here as soon as they are available.

honni (Health on the Net Northern Ireland) brings together print and online resources, to help all HSC staff in Northern Ireland with their evidence-based practice.

As one of the many benefits, we offer FREE training.  Our qualified subject librarians are here to help you get the most out of honni.  We can also train you in how to make the best use of specialised databases and online resources for your professional area – like Cinahl, Medline, eBooks and others.  We want to make sure that we are providing the training that you need, and would appreciate your help in completing our survey.  It should take only around 5 minutes to complete and is open until 31 May 2014.

Survey Closed on 31 May 2014
Thank you for taking part.  We value your feedback and will use the results to help us tailor our training to your individual needs.
  • Password Self-Service Facility

A new online Password Self-Service facility is now available.

For information about the system see the Password Self-Service Guide.

The service can be accessed from http://www.honni.qub.ac.uk/ChangeorForgottenPassword/ or, if you already understand how it works, directly from https://pss.qub.ac.uk/.

  • BMJ Subscribed Content

The problem below has been resolved. 24th March 2014.

There is a problem with our subscribed content from BMJ. Some content is free and this is still available from the BMJ website or by using the ‘Free in PMC’ button in Pubmed. We are in contact with our suppliers about this problem and it will be resolved as quickly as possible. In the meantime we apologise for any inconvenience.

  • Elsevier support for IE7 ends

Elsevier has announced that it is ceasing support for Internet Explorer 7.   The latest version of IE is version 11, but IE7 is still used in HSC Trusts to some extent.  The ending of support does not necessarily mean that there will be problems accessing Elsevier resources.  It merely introduces the possibility that, should problems arise in the future, the publisher will not assist with resolving them.  Resources published by Elsevier which are available via honni are ‘Science Direct’ and ‘Clinical Key’ so these are the resources which could potentially be affected.

In the unlikely event that you do experience problems with either of these resources you may need to request that IE be updated to a newer version.  If you are still using IE7 on a home computer used to access resources, we recommend that you update your browser now.

  • honniConnect from Encore mobile

If you use the mobile version of honni Encore you will need to be aware of the following issue when  checking for availability of full text.  Clicking on the honniConnect button should lead to a web page which informs you what full text is available and, if none is available, provides links for requesting the item and/or checking the catalogue for print copies.  This is not working as expected.  Instead you will be directed to the article abstract in EBSCO where you will again have to click the honniConnect button before obtaining information about full text availability.

The supplier has informed us that this is due to a software bug which they are currently investigating.  Note that you can still get information about full text availability, it’s just that more steps are required to do so.

  • 93% of Books and Articles Free

Since September, when we moved to the current charges for the supply of books and articles, 93% of requests have been met from within our own substantial collections. Happily this means we have been able to supply these free of charge. When we are not able to provide books or articles free of charge, we will always contact you to check that you wish to proceed before we request material externally.

  • A new range of key electronic journals

Over a dozen new titles are now available to honni users.

If you’re looking for the most up-to-date peer-reviewed research then journals are one of the best places to start.  We are constantly working to make more resources available online.  Full-text access to the following journals is available via honni to all HSC staff:

If you would like information on setting up a table of contents alert direct to your email for these or any other titles, contact your subject librarian.

  • Improvements to full-text linking

In order to determine if an article is available in full text and, if so, link to the article, library systems need to use something called a link resolver.  Some link resolvers are better than others at performing this work and we have been aware that the one honni was using had serious limitations.  It will be familiar to you as the following image:

    honniConnect

Now a new link resolver has been implemented which should greatly improve information about full text availability and access to the full text of articles.  The new resolver can be seen in databases such as Cinahl, Pubmed, and Proquest Medical Library, as well as in the Articles section of honni Encore.  It is still called honniConnect but it uses a different image and will appear as follows:

     honniConnect2

For all journals which require a subscription you obviously have to log in before you can access the full text of articles, and that will always be true.  However, from ‘honni Encore’ you will now be required to login before you can see whether or not full text is available.  It only applies to ‘honni Encore’, not to any of the databases, although if you are already logged in you wouldn’t notice anyway.  We are exploring possibilities for altering this so that login is only required when actually connecting to the full text, and we will update this notice when more information is available.

We think you will find the new honniConnect much more accurate and reliable, and we sincerely hope your experience will be a positive one.  Please let us know either way.
