The supplier of our resource discovery system, EBSCO, has planned to carry out system maintenance between 2 a.m. on Friday 1st May and 4 a.m. on Saturday 2nd May.  During that time you will not be able to access the A-Z list of electronic journals or use honniConnect to link to articles from the HONNI resource discovery service.  You should still be able to access articles provided via PDF or HTML links.  Individual Databases will remain accessible throughout although, while honniConnect is offline, it will not be possible to obtain information about library holdings.

We apologise for any inconvenience this my cause.  The system is expected to be fully functional again by 4 a.m. on 2nd May.

There is currently a problem with full access via IOP Science to Physics in Medicine and Biology.  We are working to resolve this.

You can access these journals in 2 ways:

(1)    Go to www.honni.qub.ac.uk and search for ClinicalKey. Click Online Access underneath the catalogue result for ClinicalKey. Log in with your HONNI details, and when ClinicalKey opens click Journals. Use the Browse Journals box to search for Lancet. All Lancet specialty journals will be displayed. Click on a journal to view available issues/articles.

(2)    Go to www.honni.qub.ac.uk and click E-Journals A-Z. When the A-Z opens, type Lancet into the search box and click Search. All Lancet specialty journals will be displayed. Click on the blue ClinicalKey link underneath each journal to view available issues/articles (some of the journals may have links to other publishers in addition to ClinicalKey).

From January 2015 the Renal Drug Database has been made available to HONNI users.  Contact your local HSC Librarian for further details.

We are aware that for some users there is currently an issue with accessing this resource via Internet Explorer; the supplier is investigating.  Full functionality is available via Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

A number of improvements have recently been made to the HONNI Catalogue and resource discovery service:

1. The basic search screen now uses a tabbed search facility. The ‘New Search’ link redirects to the basic search screen instead of the HONNI home page, which ensures that you remain logged in and do not lose previous searches when you click ‘New Search’.
2. The ‘Electronic Resources’ category under Resource Types now accurately includes all e-journals as well as e-books. Previously many of these were missing due to the way in which the system identified resources for inclusion but this problem has now been resolved.
3. The results display has been cleaned up to help ensure that there are no entries in the holdings table for items which are not available.

There have been other small changes to improve the display and we are continuing our efforts to improve the system.  Issues such as the number of e-journal links displayed and the Resource Type categories used for refining results are high on the agenda.  Information about further developments will be posted to the Library Notices as it becomes available.

The Medical & HSC Library has recently purchased a substantial collection of electronic journals to be made available to HSC members of the Library:

• Wiley Medicine & Nursing Collection containing 418 titles
• 20 individual journals as shown below

All the new journals are now available in full text right up to the current issue to help you keep abreast of current practice, research and development.  You can connect to them via the HONNI catalogue or directly from the images below.  Just log in with your library card number and password.

The titles were selected based on user feedback and an assessment of current holdings.  The Library tries to acquire as many key full text journals as possible in line with our strategic aim to make most resources available electronically to ensure equality of access for all HSC staff wherever they are based.

Given the funding challenge, complete electronic access is difficult to achieve.  In support of our bid to retain current funding levels in the face of the ever-increasing cost of resources, we would ask users to stress the value of the service when any opportunity arises.

On 1^st January 2015, Elsevier ceased publishing the following journal titles, meaning that they will no longer be accessible via ClinicalKey:

•             Pain
•             Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis
•             Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis Supplements
•             Ultrasound Clinics

 

Below are recommendations for alternative journals that are still available via ClinicalKey:

•             Journal of Pain
•             European Journal of Pain
•             Journal of Pain and Symptom Management
•             Gastroenterology
•             Seminars in Ultrasound, CT, and MRI
•             Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology

 

Also, the journals below will be made available via ClinicalKey during 2015:

•             JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology (brand new journal – February 2015)
•             The Journal of the American Dental Association (April 2015)

If you’re doing a Google Scholar search, you can now see at a glance if the full text of a particular result in available via HONNI.

If full text is available, a ‘Full Text from HONNI’ link will appear beside the result:


To take advantage of this new feature, follow the steps below:

1. Go to http://scholar.google.com
2. Click Settings
3. Click Library Links
4. Use the search bar to search for HONNI
5. HONNI – Full Text from HONNI will appear as an option underneath the search box (other options, e.g. Queen’s University Belfast – QConnect, might already be displayed) – tick the box beside HONNI -Full Text from HONNI
   
6. Click Save

You will be returned to the Google Scholar homepage.  Now, when you run a search, ‘Full Text from HONNI’ will appear beside results from HONNI subscribed journals.  Click on this link, log in with your HONNI details when prompted, and a HONNIConnect window will open, containing a link to the full text.

If you are logged in to Google, the above settings should be saved permanently and applied to every computer on which you use Google Scholar.

If you are not logged in to Google, you may have to repeat the above steps on every computer you use, and if, at any stage, you clear your computer of cookies.
