4th March 2010: The following problem has now been resolved.

There is currently a problem accessing electronic books from ebrary in the library catalogue.  Having located an ebrary electronic book, a ‘Page not found’ error message is displayed when you click GO from the honniConnect menu. This is due to a recent change in the ebrary subscription which requires the catalogue entries to be re-configured – a process which may take some time to complete.

However, you can still access ebrary from the honni A-Z list of Databases.  Just click on the ebrary link in the A-Z list to connect directly to the database.  You can then search for the specific title of interest, or look for other relevant material.  Note that, as with other electronic resources, you need to be logged in to honni before you can access e-books.

The journal Stroke has recently been added to the honni A-Z list of electronic journals.  Full text e-access is available for articles from 1970 to current.  To access the journal, please log in to honni e-lib and type in the title of the journal in the Find e-journal section.

Ebsco have launched Citation Matcher now available on all the honni Ebsco databases, including Cinahl Plus and the Biomedical Reference Collection.  The Citation Matcher feature enables users to search for article citations for which they have incorrect or incomplete information.   View screen shots and read more about it:  Citation Matcher.

It is now possible to connect to honni services directly from Pubmed so that you may:

• see at a glance which Pubmed references are available in full text from the library
• conveniently link from Pubmed references to the full text
• see what print holdings are available and/or order copies of articles by local document delivery if electronic full text is not available

How does it work?

During a customised Pubmed session, the honniConnect button is displayed on the abstract or citation display of articles. Clicking the button displays the menu of services provided by honni which shows any full-text availability and allows users to connect directly to the full text, just as they can from honni e-Lib. It also shows the library print holdings and, if no full text is available, it offers the option for users to request articles via the local document delivery service. To avail of this facility, users must access Pubmed from a special URL (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?otool=igbqueulib), or connect to it from the Pubmed link in the honni database list.

If you have Pubmed bookmarked in your browser, replacing the URL with the one given above will allow you to access honni services in this way.

NLH (National Library for Health) has become NHS Evidence (www.evidence.nhs.uk) and is now under the direction of NICE.  While the site has a new look, many of the key features of interest to HSC personnel are still available.

• Specialist Libraries can be found under Conduct a specialist search and selecting Search Specialist Collection and then choosing the specialist library.
• Clinical Knowledge summaries are still available by following the steps outlined above for specialist libraries but instead of selecting the specialist library of your choice, select Clinical Knowledge Summaries from the blue menu at the top of the page.
• Dynamed is under the resources section of the Clinical Knowledge Summaries page.

NB.  As was the case with NLH, HSC staff cannot use their honni username and password to access Athens resources on the NHS Evidence site.

MedicinesComplete is the online service from RPS Publishing and provides online access to some of the world’s leading drug and healthcare references. It now combines information on more than 10,000 drug, poison, interaction and herbal monographs; the latest advice on prescribing, dispensing and administering drugs and medicines; up-to-date guidance on disease treatments, disease management and therapeutics; and the latest advice on analysing, formulating and preparing drugs, medicines and many other pharmaceutical products.

Drug resources covered include the British National Formulary, the British National Formulary for Children, Clarke’s Analysis of Drugs and Poisons, the Handbook of Injectable Drugs, Martindale: the complete drug reference, The Merck Index, Stockley’s Drug Interactions and Stockley’s Interaction Alerts.

Access is both on and off campus by logging on to the honni e-Lib and under Find Database searching for Medicines Complete. The trial will be available until the end of June. Please forward any comments about the resource to the subject librarian for Pharmacy, Alex McIlroy (a.mcilroy@qub.ac.uk)

As a result of a journals review completed in 2008 funding was made available to purchase some new electronic access. The journal titles are outlined below and these are all now available through honni e-Lib.

• JOSPT (Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy)
• Arthroscopy
• Experimental Hematology
• Journal of American College of Radiology

The method of authenticating to MD Consult has now been changed and we are hoping this will have resolved some, if not all, of the following problems users were experiencing when trying to access the database:

• A ‘Preview’ page
• A message about the subscription having expired
• A message saying you are already logged in and cannot log in again

Please note that a second login will now be required for connection to MD Consult resources.

What to do if you still encounter problems

• Log out of all systems
• Close all browser windows
• Empty your browser cache (from Tools, Internet Options select Delete under Browsing history)
• Report the problem to med.info@qub.ac.uk

EThOS is the Electronic Theses Online System which allows you to find, access and archive e-theses that are produced in UK Higher Education institutions.

Using the EThOS service at http://ethos.bl.uk, you can search for PhD theses by author, subject or Institution. Many of the theses are available for immediate download whilst others can be ordered for digitisation through the EThOS website. The first time you place an order for a thesis you must register with EThOS in order to protect copyright in the thesis.

Most universities are making their theses freely available but a small number will require payment. If you are asked to pay for the digitisation of a thesis or the thesis you require is not available through EThOS then contact staff in any of the Medical & Healthcare Libraries.

Users of PubMed may have noticed some changes to the overall layout of the database and some of its functionality over the past 6 months.  For example, icons that indicated availability of abstracts and free full text have been removed.  Further information can be found by following the link below or by checking the NLM Technical Bulletin.
