  • honniconnect from Pubmed

THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED.  If you notice any further issues with honniConnect from Pubmed please email med.info@qub.ac.uk with details.  (7/8/2012)

There is currently a problem with honniconnect from Pubmed which means that it is not displaying the appropriate availability of articles in full-text.  So the Pubmed entry in the honni catalogue has been changed temporarily to the standard Pubmed URL which does not contain any honniconnect links.

You can still determine if an article is available in full text by searching for the journal title in honni Encore.  The dates of any available full text are displayed which you can compare against the published article date to determine if the article is available.  You can then connect to the source of the journal to locate the article.

For example, the article “Acute absolute vasodilatation is associated with a lower vascular wall stiffness in pulmonary arterial hypertension” is found in Pubmed.  From the citation you can see that it is published in the International Journal of Cardiology, July 2011.  In honni Encore a search for the International Journal of Cardiology shows that it is available in full text via Science Direct from 1995 on.  Connect to Science Direct, search for the article title and/or author within the International Journal of Cardiology, and connect to the full text.

Please note that if you still see honniconnect links in Pubmed it is probably because you have accessed it through a bookmarked page.  If this happens you should either ignore the honniconnect links or connect to Pubmed directly from the honni catalogue.  This notification will be updated appropriately when the problem is resolved.

  • Southern Trust Network Problem

This problem was resolved on Wednesday 4th July.

A network problem in the Southern HSC Trust has resulted in electronic resources via honni being unavailable since Thursday 28th June.  It has been reported to the Trust IT department and is under investigation by their staff.  It is not a problem with the honni system, so you will still be able to access resources from home or from an internet device not connected to the Trust network.

PDF links from search results are the quickest and easiest way of connecting to the full text of journal articles so, wherever possible, PDF links are provided from honni Encore.  If you see an article without a PDF link it is either because the database doesn’t facilitate PDF linking or the article isn’t actually available in full text from that database.  In these cases you will usually see a honniconnect link instead.

    honniConnect

The honniconnect link displays a page listing any sources of full text that are known to be available, based on the information in our journal holdings database. There may be more than one full text link if the journal is available from multiple sources.  If the article is not available in full text, a Place Request link will always be provided so that you have the option of requesting a copy of the article from the library.

In some cases there may be neither a PDF nor a honniconnect link, but you can still check for yourself whether the article is available in full-text.  Just click the article title to go to the provider’s own website.  As the system is further developed such cases should decline or disappear.  In addition, the number of full text links made available via honniconnect will continue to increase until all available full text is reported as accurately as possible.

  • Resolving an issue with the honni menu display

Some people have been finding that the drop-down ‘My Account’ menu on the honni home page does not display properly.  When hovering over ‘My Account’, the menu appears off to the right and attempting to select an item from the menu causes it to disappear.

The problem usually occurs in Internet Explorer (IE) when Compatibility View is turned on.  Or it may occur if you have an older version of IE – version 7 or earlier.  If you encounter this problem please try the following:

    • Update your version of IE or try a different browser such as Firefox or Google Chrome
    • If you are using IE, make sure that Compatibility View is turned off by unticking Compatibility View in the browser Tools menu.

If this does not resolve the problem, email med.info@qub.ac.uk with details. Please note that the functions offered in the menu are always accessible by logging in to My Account directly.

  • New honni website

The new honni website uses advanced web searching to combine book and article searching in a single interface to make resources easier to find. The new approach provides a radically different way of searching for library resources and has required complex and detailed development work which will be ongoing for some time. Please bear with us in this initial phase as we complete the full range of enhancements.

We are keen to know what you think of the new site. Do you find it easier to use? Are you able to access easily the resources you are looking for? Do you like the look and feel? Or any other comments you may wish to make.

    Your Comments

    29 May 2012

We have received comments from some people expressing concern about the new search facility.  Your feedback is much appreciated.  Posts received to date, however, were so general in nature that it was difficult to respond in any useful way.  After speaking to each blogger individually we have identified the specific problems as follows:

You asked us how to access e-journals on the new system.
All you have to do is type the journal title into the search box.  When the title is displayed click on the link with the most suitable date range.  Do not click on the icon.

You asked us how to access databases.
Just type the database name (e.g. Medline or Cinahl) into the search box, and click the link which says ‘Go to this resource’.  You can then carry out a detailed literature search as before.

    You asked about logging in.
To reduce the number of logins you now only have to login at the point you access the full text of an article or connect to a database.

You asked about the Advanced Search.
This only searches titles on the catalogue.  It does not apply when you click the Articles tab. As always, to do an advanced search for articles you need to do this from within a specific database.  We are considering either renaming ‘Advanced Search’ to ‘Advanced Catalogue Search’, or removing it altogether.

When providing comments please be as specific as possible. We will contact individuals to explore the problem in greater detail and offer assistance as required.

The new system works in a very different way from the previous one, and is based on the principle that initial searching should be as simple as possible.  Library staff are running training sessions throughout the Trusts to help users make the transition, and can always be contacted by phone or email at any time (http://www.honni.qub.ac.uk/Contacts/).
