Abstract
This article examines the photography of Rotimi Fani-Kayode in the context of late twentieth-century British art, exploring how his work addresses issues of sexuality, race, and identity. Fani-Kayode’s images challenge dominant narratives by intertwining Yoruba cosmology with queer aesthetics, confronting homophobia, racism, and the AIDS crisis. Through an analysis of selected works, this article highlights his subversion of gender binaries, reclamation of Black subjectivity, and critique of Western cultural hegemony. In doing so, it argues for Fani-Kayode’s vital role in reshaping the boundaries and discourse of British art.
Keywords: Rotimi Fani-Kayode, British art, queer theory, race, Yoruba culture, postcolonialism
