Our ambition is for Queen’s to be a leading university in the responsible use, critical examination and development of AI and digital technologies. We want to use these technologies to enhance education, accelerate research and innovation, improve services and support our community to develop future-focused skills. We will also keep ethical, legal and sustainability considerations central to our decision-making.
AI adoption is not mandatory. Our approach is based on informed choice, professional judgement and appropriate governance. We want colleagues to understand the opportunities, limitations and risks so that they can make informed decisions around the use of AI.
We recognise concerns around issues including environmental impact, bias, transparency and the use of copyrighted material. These concerns will continue to provide an important source of input and consideration within University governance, guidance, procurement and decision-making.
Our aim is for AI to enhance, rather than replace, our academic and professional strengths. Critical thinking, creativity, ethical reasoning, judgement and human understanding remain fundamental to education, research and professional practice.
Current and planned provision includes introductory sessions, role-specific training, communities of practice and practical examples. Some training may be required where necessary for cybersecurity, legal or regulatory compliance, but the wider aim is to build confidence and capability.
