Using MFDs without the Active Directory

Queen’s new fleet of Xerox multifunction devices (MFDs) are intended to eventually replace local printers in staff offices. If your computer is linked to the Queen’s Active Directory then the print queues will show up automatically; otherwise you have a little work to do. The instructions below have been tested on Macs running OS X 10.8-10.10 (ie. all currently supported versions of OS X), Windows 7 (64-bit Enterprise), and Ubuntu LTS 12.04 and 14.04.

Before starting, read the item about print servers, so you know what machine and queue to point your computer at.

My sincere thanks to Ian Stewart, Malachy Montgomery, and Craig Jackson for useful discussions about this!
