MFD print servers

Different servers handle the print queues for staff (including postgraduates) and undergraduate students. The addresses for these are listed below. As/when these change the server addresses will be updated here, but not necessarily in the rest of the documentation!

Staff printing:

  • Colour – smb://staff-print1a.ads.qub.ac.uk/Staff%20Colour
  • Mono – smb://staff-print2a.ads.qub.ac.uk/Staff%20Mono

Student printing:

  • stu-print1.ads.qub.ac.uk/Student%20Colour
  • stu-print1.ads.qub.ac.uk/Student%Mono

Staff/postgrads cannot print to the undergraduate queues, and vice-versa.

The %20 in the queue names represents a space – on Windows the queues are simply ‘Staff Mono’, etc, but on OS X and Linux the print service can’t cope with spaces, so we use % encoding, just like on the web.

It’s important to realise that though separate queues exist for mono and colour jobs, the server does nothing to enforce this. On the AD Windows machines the drivers are locked to mono output for the mono queue, but if you send a colour job to the mono queue and print from a colour Xerox the job will print in colour. You must set the printing defaults in the driver, or via CUPS, to enforce monochrome prints. On OS X you can set a default for each queue from the Xerox Features / Color Options popup, though if you use a mono printer driver (e.g. the 5845) then it will always print in greyscale anyway.
