I am a qualified and practicing British Sign Language (BSL)/ English interpreter. I began to learn sign language, not because of any personal experience of deafness, but due to a fascination with how language modality both inhibits and enhances linguistic expression of idea. I trained in England then worked in Scotland before moving back to Northern Ireland to start my PhD. My research takes the form of a PhD Translation however in reality is multidisciplinary, incorporating elements of geography, sociology, law, social policy and the digital humanities as I explore my title ‘Demographics, Resources and Deficit: The Deaf community of Northern Ireland’

More detailed information about my research can be found on my research website, www.signlanguageni.com
