Accessible Learning and Wellbeing Drop-in: Who are we?

Welcome to part 1 of The Drop-in Dialogues!  Let’s begin with introductions.  We are the Accessible Learning (formerly known as Disability Service) and Wellbeing Drop-in Service- not to be confused with other drop-in services within Queen’s University Belfast.

Where can you find us?

We live in Support Rooms 2 and 3 on the first floor of One Elmwood, 11am to 3pm Mondays to Fridays, face to face and by phone.   There is a waiting area near the Student Information Point.  You arrive, scan the QR code on the sign, take a seat as you complete the short form and then wait to be called into a Support Room.  We have about 15 minutes for each appointment.

What can you expect?

Usually, we are the first port of call when someone is having difficulties, or their wellbeing is suffering.  We connect to many other services.  The Accessible Learning and Wellbeing Drop-in can support students with the impact of life’s struggles and will signpost to other services that may help if we aren’t able to.  We often can’t take the stressor away, but can help students deal with the stress associated with it.  For example, if someone comes to see us about money worries, we will suggest that SU Advice can offer the practical guidance and information about support funds or a local Food Bank.  We will listen and discuss if further emotional support is needed- someone to help you manage your thoughts and feelings.  We will check that you are safe and able to keep yourself safe.  We will explore your support network.  If you become distraught or we are worried about you, a colleague will be called to speak to you at greater length than what can be offered in Drop-in.

In short, you can expect to be treated sensitively and with respect.  What you tell us is confidential within the remit of the service. If we are worried about the safety of you or another, certain processes will be triggered.  Ultimately, we want a University filled with students who are able to give their best.  Your health and wellbeing are a huge part of that.
