On Wednesday 4th<\/sup> of December, QUB Enterprise Student\u2019s Union held the Award\u2019s Ceremony of their annual \u2018What\u2019s the Big Idea?\u2019<\/strong> competition. With just under \u00a33000 to be won over 11 categories, this competition drew in over 70 applications from across the university. Students entered their business ideas in the hopes of winning top prizes \u2018Best Innovative Business Idea\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Best Overall Idea<\/em>.\u2019 Sponsored by Harbinson Mulholland<\/strong> and Ormeau Business Park, <\/strong>QUB Enterprise SU hosted a festive lunch in celebration of the finalists, welcoming judges, university staff, and business professionals from across Belfast, including QUB alumni James Fair- CFO of Fusion Antibodies- who inspired the finalists with his guest speech. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Gilleece<\/em>– student from the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences- took away the prize for Most Innovative Idea<\/em> with his 3D-printed body armour, whilst a team of Medicine, Health, and Life Sciences students won \u2018Best Overall Idea\u2019<\/em> with their sustainable fencing product \u2018Plant Post.<\/em>\u2019 Each winner was granted \u00a3500 to pursue their business idea, whilst the 9 overall category winners received \u00a3200 each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Programme Organizer, Francesca Morelli, said \u201cWhat\u2019s the Big Idea?\u2019 is a great competition for students starting out on their entrepreneurial journey. It encourages students to think about projects commercially, and gives them that inspiration they may need to make their ideas a reality.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

MC, Alastair Cameron of Startacus, expressed that \u201cit was really great to see how engaged and passionate the student entrepreneurs were and to see how much potential their ideas had,\u201d<\/em> while Treena Clarke of sponsors, Harbinson Mulholland, commented that there was \u201cdefinitely the next generation of NI entrepreneurs in that room\u201d and that they were \u201cblown away by the ideas and the passion from the students.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

QUB Enterprise SU felt that the event was a great way to round off the first semester, celebrating creativity and rewarding innovation among students. The team used the Awards Ceremony as an opportunity to launch Semester 2 competition \u2018QUB Dragon\u2019s Den\u2019 where students will have the chance to take their business\u2019 to the next level with a more detailed application form, a tougher competitive process, and a bigger financial reward worth \u00a315,000.
