class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our Dementia NI groups particularly enjoyed the extract from Belfast writer Brian Keenan&#8217;s memoir (in <em>A Little, Aloud<\/em>) because it was set in mid-20th Century Belfast and featured the author as a young boy, trying to live up to the expectations of the father he idolises. In fact, we found that our readers with dementia loved to read Irish fiction, because of the memories it evoked and the familiarity and humour in the voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Poetry By Heart: Poems for learning and reciting.<br>Penguin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/stillreading\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2026\/06\/download.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-248\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Irish broadcaster RT\u00c9\u2019s popular radio programme<br>\u2018<strong>Sunday Miscellany\u2019<\/strong> features short excerpts of stories<br>just the right length for this activity published in several<br>anthologies, the latest available here: https:\/\/www.<br>newisland.ie\/shop\/p\/sundaymiscellany2023-2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Voices (Edited by Patricia Scanlon)<\/strong>: <em>Voices<\/em> is a collection of short stories by well-known Irish writers, edited by Patricia Scanlan as part of the Open Door series. The stories are written in clear, accessible language, making them suitable for a wide range of readers and listeners. The anthology was developed to support adult literacy and encourage confidence and enjoyment in reading.https:\/\/www.newisland.ie\/shop\/p\/voices-an-open-door-book-of-stories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Shared Reading groups, including those involving people living with dementia, the short story format offers an accessible way to explore literature together. The training provides an introduction to dementia, explores the experiences of people living with the condition, and offers practical guidance on providing person-centred support. Suitable for health and social care staff, community organisations, volunteers, carers, and members of the public seeking to improve their understanding of dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Access the training:<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/cec.hscni.net\/learningcontent\/dementia-tier-1\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dementia Tier 1 Awareness Training<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cec.hscni.net\/learningcontent\/dementia-tier-1\">https:\/\/cec.hscni.net\/learningcontent\/dementia-tier-1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charities and Organisations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.equalarts.org.uk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.equalarts.org.uk\/\">Equal Arts<\/a><\/strong>, a creative ageing charity supporting older people and those living with dementia in Gateshead, Newcastle and across the UK, are developing a series of books, created with and for people living with dementia. Open Ended Books is their first publishing initiative and their first title is <em>Bewick Tales: Stories from the life and work of Thomas Bewick<\/em> (2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Equal Arts<\/strong>&#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equalarts.org.uk\/dementia-friendly-reading\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.equalarts.org.uk\/dementia-friendly-reading\"><strong>Reading with Dementia<\/strong><\/a> model\u00a0involves\u00a0reading texts other than literature, including historical and archival material and maps. Find out more here: https:\/\/www.equalarts.org.uk\/dementia-friendly-reading <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/readingagency.org.uk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/readingagency.org.uk\/\"><strong>The Reading Agency<\/strong><\/a> provides specific dementia\u2011focused reading resources designed to support people living with dementia, their families, and carers. Their 2024 initiative <em>Reading Well for dementia<\/em><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>recommends helpful reading and works in partnership with libraries in England and Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishbooktrust.com\/reading-and-stories\/reading-is-caring\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.scottishbooktrust.com\/reading-and-stories\/reading-is-caring\">Scottish Book Trust<\/a> <\/strong>runs &#8216;The <strong>Reading is Caring<\/strong>&#8216; programme which is primarily designed for 1-2-1 professional and family carers to use with a person with dementia:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.scottishbooktrust.com%2Freading-and-stories%2Freading-is-caring&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cscoyle15%40qub.ac.uk%7C40c2f50e611e44ef945708dedceabd8d%7Ceaab77eab4a549e3a1e8d6dd23a1f286%7C0%7C0%7C639191097906520252%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=WJ8xyVs2qx2zA1aX1a9YKlJ49WL41t%2FvEcVrCanNLWI%3D&amp;reserved=0\">https:\/\/www.scottishbooktrust.com\/reading-and-stories\/reading-is-caring<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UK-based initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/dementiathemontessoriway.co.uk\/\"><strong>Dementia Care the Montessori Way<\/strong><\/a> have written a series of over thirty books which have been reviewed by residents living in Milford Care Homes in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Covering a wide variety of topics, the books have a reminiscence approach encouraging conversation and discussion. The books do not have any pictures, as this was found to cause distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cognitivebooks.co.uk\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Cognitive Books<\/a><\/strong> publishes specially designed reading materials to support people living with dementia, in collaboration with the Alzheimer&#8217;s Society. Each book features short, rhyming text, large print, memorable topics (like Classic Coronation Street or The Beatles), illustrations, and a free audio version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverbal.co\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.theverbal.co\/\"><strong>Verbal Arts Centre<\/strong><\/a> uses storytelling and reading as gentle, non-clinical tools to reduce anxiety, combat isolation, and stimulate memory amongst those living with dementia and their care-givers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their dementia-specific work focuses on three main initiatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reading Friends (Care Home Support):<\/strong> One-to-one and group reading sessions delivered by volunteers in local residential care homes to provide vital companionship and cognitive stimulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Creative Connections:<\/strong> An 8-week program for individuals with early-stage dementia, using shared readings of literature and poetry to gently trigger memories and spark conversational reminiscence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dyadic Shared Reading:<\/strong> A unique program where individuals with dementia and their caregivers attend together.
