{"id":806,"date":"2018-10-10T09:07:59","date_gmt":"2018-10-10T08:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/?p=806"},"modified":"2019-10-07T15:37:16","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T14:37:16","slug":"october-in-the-palm-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/october-in-the-palm-house\/","title":{"rendered":"October in the Palm House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN\">If you have ever wandered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/discovernorthernireland.com\/Belfast-Botanic-Gardens-and-Palm-House-Belfast-P2787\/\">Palm House in Belfast&#8217;s Botanic Gardens<\/a>, you may have come across this hanging frame containing a childhood memory of the Palm House.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"563\" height=\"750\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-807 size-full\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/09\/newpalmhouse.jpg\"><span lang=\"EN\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">It&#8217;s from Part One of Forrest Reid&#8217;s autobiographical novel <em>Apostate<\/em> (1926) in which he describes a childhood memory of visits to the Palm House. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"970\" height=\"391\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-810 size-full\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/09\/When-I-was-about-six-or-seven-crop.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/09\/When-I-was-about-six-or-seven-crop.jpg 970w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/09\/When-I-was-about-six-or-seven-crop-300x121.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2018\/09\/When-I-was-about-six-or-seven-crop-768x310.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 970px) 100vw, 970px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturenorthernireland.org\/features\/literature\/forrest-reid\">Forrest Reid (1875-1947)<\/a> is not well-known today, he is one of the most significant literary figures to emerge from Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>During his lifetime, Reid was admired by writers including Walter de la Mare and E.M. Forster, who dubbed him the &#8220;most important man in Belfast&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Reid was a keen collector of illustrated postcards and hundreds of these are held in albums in Special Collections.
