During a career spanning over four decades he produced sixteen novels, two autobiographies, the definitive account of book illustrators of the eighteen-sixties, acclaimed studies of W.B. Forster and Forrest Reid (MS44\/7\/8)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>E. M. Forster once described Forrest Reid as the &#8216;most important man in Belfast&#8217;, yet even in his native country he was never well known. Scornful of fashionable literary trends, Reid remained faithful to his own unique vision, one that he repeatedly attempted to capture in his work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Crying for Elysium<\/em> offers a range of previously uncollected stories, poems and essays, in addition to all of the material from the anthologies Reid published during his lifetime: &#8216;A Garden by the Sea&#8217; (1919), &#8216;Retrospective Adventures&#8217; (1940) and &#8216;Notes and Impressions&#8217; (1942). All Reid&#8217;s short stories are included, as well as his 1905 novella <em>The Garden God<\/em>.
