The research underpins this exhibition, which was curated by Clarke (Mid-Antrim Museum), Shirin Murphy (Carrickfergus Museum) and Laura Patrick, all graduates of QUB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"545\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/10\/handcuffs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2828 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/10\/handcuffs1.jpg 545w, https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/44\/2022\/10\/handcuffs1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Artefacts in the exhibition, on loan from Carrickfergus Museum, Larne Museum, and Mid Antrim Museum, include: photographs and paintings of Carrickfergus Gaol (the county gaol until the opening of Belfast\u2019s Crumlin Road Gaol); the material culture of punishment such as manacles and handcuffs; and alcohol bottles, which point to 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century fears about the connection between drinking and crime.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Accompanying panels outline 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century punishments, like transportation, incarceration and execution, alongside case studies of some women, men and children suspected of deviant activity or breaking the law in Larne, Carrickfergus, Ballymena, and the surrounding areas. In exploring themes of poverty, unwed motherhood, and alcoholism, the exhibition highlights how attitudes towards gender, class and age shaped punishments.
