SE students in teams
SEFYP teams during a Show & Tell

The Software Engineering Final Year Project (SEFYP) is a capstone project module taken by all students from the BEng in Software Engineering,  Queen’s University Belfast, UK  in their final year. The  module focuses on a team-based project and teams usually consists of 4-5 students; most students spend a year in industry before taking their final year. The QUB/EEECS code of the SEFYP module is CSC3032; our documentation includes this code for reference.

The projects require either the construction of a new software system  or the contribution to an existing codebase; each team member is responsible for a key component of the  system (e.g., a functionality, an API). The module covers two semesters: SEM1 (mid September – mid December) and  SEM2 (start of January – start of April).

Expressions of Interest (EoI)

The call for AY2023-24 is now closed.

The SEFYP team invites non-academic organisations from all sectors and academics across disciplines to challenge our SE students with authentic problems that can be addressed through the design and development of a new software system or the contribution to an existing codebase as part of their SEFYP.

Organisations and projects committed to responsible and sustainable technology development are strongly encouraged. This is in line with QUB Strategy 2030, which identifies driving social change, transition to a net-zero society, and embracing the UN Sustainable Development Goals as its priority goals.

To facilitate the co-ordination of the EoI call we work with the QUB-Science shop (for community-based projects), with QUB/EEECS careers and YOPE team (for industry-based projects), and and Innovation in Teaching-funded inititiave (for cross-department projects).

  • The CSC3032-SEFYP module is 25 week-long
  • The module starts on the third week of September, ends in mid-April
  • Students form teams of four, there are usually ~70 students
  • Students bid for their preferred projects from the Project Booklet
  • The Project Booklet contains the selected EoIs
  • Projects are allocated in the second week of October
  • Each team will need to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
