You can tell if you&#8217;re using O365 if, after logging into the <a href=\"https:\/\/qmail.qub.ac.uk\/\">Qmail<\/a> service, the server suggests you direct your browser to <em>outlook.com<\/em> instead of the Queen&#8217;s site (see left image). In addition the top left corner of your webmail will say Office365 in large friendly letters (though it does not tell you <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phrases_from_The_Hitchhiker%27s_Guide_to_the_Galaxy#Don.27t_Panic\">not to panic<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If you want to use Apple&#8217;s Mail with O365 you can via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_Message_Access_Protocol\">IMAP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simple_Mail_Transfer_Protocol\">SMTP<\/a>, but it&#8217;s not entirely obvious how to do so &#8211; hopefully these notes will assist. Unfortunately the exact process tends to vary a bit with each release of Mail, so depending on what version of OS X you&#8217;re running the steps may be slightly different, but the basic process is similar.<\/p>\n<h1>1. Starting up<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-324 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-03-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\">Open the Add Account dialog from Mail&#8217;s <em style=\"color: #000000\">Preferences\/Accounts<\/em> section, and select <em>Add O<\/em><em style=\"color: #000000\">ther Mail Account<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n<h1>2. Your details<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-325 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-04-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\">Provide your name, email address, and QOL password. After clicking <em>Create<\/em>&nbsp;you will see a message about manually configuring your account, and asking for more information.<\/p>\n<h1>3. Incoming server<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-332 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-06-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\">For the&nbsp;<em style=\"color: #000000\">incoming mail server<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em style=\"color: #000000\">account type<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<strong style=\"color: #000000;font-style: normal\">IMAP<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>mail server&nbsp;<\/em>is&nbsp;<strong>outlook.office365.com<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em style=\"color: #000000\">user name<\/em> is&nbsp;<strong style=\"color: #000000;font-style: normal\">studentno@ads.qub.ac.uk<\/strong> &#8211; replacing studentno with your actual student number<\/li>\n<li><em>password<\/em> is your QOL password<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may be asked for additional information on the incoming server. If so, the defaults are fine.<\/p>\n<h1>4. Outgoing server<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-334 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-08-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/p>\n<p>For the&nbsp;<em style=\"color: #000000\">outgoing mail server<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em style=\"color: #000000\">server&nbsp;name<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<strong style=\"color: #000000;font-style: normal\">smtp.qub.ac.uk<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em style=\"color: #000000\">username<\/em> is your student number <em style=\"color: #000000\">only<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em style=\"color: #000000\">password<\/em> is your QOL password<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Validation of the SMTP server details will often throw up an error &#8211; this is expected and can be ignored for now.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not using the O365 SMTP servers here as they don&#8217;t deal well with QUB mailing lists, so it&#8217;s safest to use the QUB server instead.<\/p>\n<h1>5. Tweaking the setup<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-329\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-08-150x150.png\" alt=\"student-o365-mail-setup-08\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-330\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-09-150x150.png\" alt=\"student-o365-mail-setup-09\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-10a.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-331\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/screenshotsfromtheedge\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/66\/2015\/11\/student-o365-mail-setup-10a-150x150.png\" alt=\"student-o365-mail-setup-10a\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a>When the account setup screen has disappeared, go to the&nbsp;<em>Accounts<\/em> tab in&nbsp;<em>Preferences<\/em> and click on the newly created account.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<em style=\"color: #000000\">Mailbox behaviors<\/em> and uncheck&nbsp;<em style=\"color: #000000\">Store draft messages on the server<\/em> &#8211; this rarely works well and causes intermittent hangs.<\/li>\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<em style=\"color: #000000\">Advanced<\/em> and uncheck&nbsp;<em style=\"color: #000000\">Automatically detect and maintain account settings<\/em> &#8211; this is also more trouble than it&#8217;s worth.<\/li>\n<li>Click on&nbsp;<em>Account Information<\/em> and from the&nbsp;<em>Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)<\/em> popup select&nbsp;<em>Edit SMTP server list\u2026<\/em><\/li>\n<li>With the smtp.qub.ac.uk entry highlighted, click on the&nbsp;<em>Advanced<\/em> tab<\/li>\n<li>Uncheck&nbsp;<em>Automatically detect and maintain account settings<\/em>, and make sure the&nbsp;<em>Port<\/em> is set to 587, with&nbsp;<em>SSL<\/em> enabled<\/li>\n<li>Close the dialog boxes, opting to save changes to the account<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You should now be able to send and receive email using Mail.app. You&#8217;ll want to click on the little&nbsp;<em>Mailboxes<\/em> button under the main toolbar to see all your mail folders.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to be aware of &#8211; O365 webmail keeps sent and deleted email in folders called <em>Sent Items<\/em> and <em>Deleted Items<\/em> respectively. Mac Mail calls the same folders <em>Sent Messages<\/em> and <em>Deleted Messages<\/em>. Typically this means that sent and deleted items end up in different folders depending on which client you use, though recently I have seen Mail automatically use the&nbsp;<em>Items<\/em> folders &#8211; I am not sure if this is down to Mail being smart, or the O365 servers\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Much (all undergraduate, some postgraduate) student email is now hosted by the Microsoft Office365 (henceforth O365) cloud service.
