Reporting of the war has highlighted the role of the Wagner Group on the Russian side, for instance. On the other side, Ukraine has relied heavily upon established militias such as the Azov Battalion, as well as newly formed civilian militias, to repel Russian armed forces.

Militias are armed non-state groups that are usually recruited from the civilian population to support state security forces, primarily during times of emergency. These para-militarised, quasi-institutional groups strengthen both the quantity – and sometimes the quality – of the state’s military capability.

To continue reading, please click here.

Article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Photo by STNGR Industries on Unsplash

Dale Pankhurst looks at the role of militias in the current conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

52
1037,1038,810,1039,1040,811,1041,1042
post-8373","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-conflict","tag-militia","tag-russian","tag-ukraine","tag-ukraine-war-2022","tag-vladimir-putin","tag-volodymyr-zelensky","tag-war-in-ukraine","tag-zelensky
["authors
publish

search
["featured_image
["title","jetpack_featured_media_url","jetpack_sharing_enabled","amp_enabled
["GET
