Maybe not, given that children with dyscalculia \u2013 or mathematical learning difficulties \u2013 are less likely to be diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digest.bps.org.uk\/2018\/09\/18\/uk-study-finds-children-with-maths-difficulties-sldm-dyscalculia-are-100-times-less-likely-to-receive-an-official-diagnosis-than-peers-with-dyslexia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>\u00a0shows that children with dyslexia are more than a hundred times more likely to receive a diagnosis and educational support than children with dyscalculia. This is despite the fact that dyslexia and dyscalculia are expected to be equally common.<\/p>\n<p>This is worrying, given that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk\/research-long-term-costs-numeracy-difficulties-2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a>\u00a0shows low numeracy might affect people\u2019s life chances more negatively than low literacy. Indeed, there is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk\/why-numeracy-important\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strong link<\/a>\u00a0between numeracy and educational success, income, mental and physical health and even chances of arrest and incarceration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is dyscalculia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dyscalculia is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ldonline.org\/article\/13709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defined<\/a>\u00a0as a condition that involves long-term, severe difficulties with mathematics \u2013 which cause significant problems with academic or occupational performance, or with daily activities.<\/p>\n<p>Some typical signs of dyscalculia that parents might notice are using finger counting \u2013 even for simple arithmetic \u2013 struggling to retrieve number facts from memory (such as times tables), and struggling to learn new procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Dyscalculic children might also have trouble using calendars and clocks, they might struggle with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuffieldfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/Morsanyi%2042027%20-%20Main%20Public%20report_Final%20(Oct18).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalling the
