{"id":5344,"date":"2019-02-05T16:49:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T16:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpol.qub.ac.uk\/?p=5344"},"modified":"2019-02-05T16:49:34","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T16:49:34","slug":"january-1919-irish-republic-league-of-nations-new-world-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/qpol\/january-1919-irish-republic-league-of-nations-new-world-order\/","title":{"rendered":"January 1919: the Irish Republic, the League of Nations and a new world order"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A century ago, on January 25, 1919, delegates to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Paris-Peace-Conference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paris Peace Conference<\/a>&nbsp;formally agreed on the establishment of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/treaty-of-versailles-began-the-modern-era-of-multilateralism-100-years-on-is-a-new-world-older-emerging-110046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">League of Nations<\/a>, US President Woodrow Wilson\u2019s attempt to create a new international order following the World War I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four days earlier, on January 21, D\u00e1il \u00c9ireann, Ireland\u2019s national parliament, had met for the first time. Its assembly in Dublin\u2019s Mansion House was politically set to \u201cParis time\u201d. Proclaiming an Irish Republic, the revolutionary parliament issued a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.difp.ie\/docs\/1919\/Declaration-of-independence\/1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Declaration of Independence<\/a>&nbsp;from British rule in French, Irish, and English. It also sent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oireachtas.ie\/en\/debates\/debate\/dail\/1919-01-21\/13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Message to the Free Nations of the World<\/a>, and delegates to the Paris peace conference. It read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Ireland today reasserts her historic nationhood confidently before the new world emerging from the War.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither the Irish Republic, nor its representatives would be admitted at Versailles. But international recognition of the Irish Republic, under the principles of the \u201cnew world order\u201d established in Paris \u2013 self-determination, liberal democracy and internationalist development \u2013 would become a key battle ground in the Irish war of independence.
