{"id":5283,"date":"2019-01-10T12:46:37","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T12:46:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpol.qub.ac.uk\/?p=5283"},"modified":"2019-01-10T12:46:37","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T12:46:37","slug":"queens-university-welcomes-tanaiste-simon-coveney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/qpol\/queens-university-welcomes-tanaiste-simon-coveney\/","title":{"rendered":"Queen\u2019s University welcomes T\u00e1naiste Simon Coveney"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As part of the Queen\u2019s University Policy Engagement Lecture Series, the T\u00e1naiste joined a packed room of more than 300 people for meaningful discussion, engaged debate and open dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking about Brexit at the event, the T\u00e1naiste said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to make sure that UK withdrawal from the European Union doesn\u2019t jeopardise the foundation of the shared, peaceful future for everyone on this island provided by the Good Friday Agreement. That is our agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also called for more public discussion on pressing political issues. He said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIndeed, we need to find more ways and provide more spaces for such public conversations, where passionate beliefs and imaginative ideas can be aired in an environment that is as calm and considered as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUniversities like Queen\u2019s are the perfect places to do that, as they engage our young people while stressing the values of objectivity and high-quality research, as well as inclusivity and mutual respect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice-Chancellor and President of Queen\u2019s University Belfast, Professor Ian Greer said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was delighted to welcome T\u00e1naiste Simon Coveney to participate in the Queen\u2019s University Policy Engagement Lecture Series.
