{"id":5106,"date":"2018-11-06T09:06:25","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T09:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpol.qub.ac.uk\/?p=5106"},"modified":"2018-11-06T09:06:25","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T09:06:25","slug":"imagining-future-selves-childrens-attitudes-older-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/qpol\/imagining-future-selves-childrens-attitudes-older-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Imagining their Future Selves"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our recent article \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/chso.12289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imagining their Future Selves: Children\u2019s Attitudes to Older People and their Expectations of Life at Age 70<\/a>\u2019 published in the journal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/10990860\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children &amp; Society<\/a>&nbsp;provided an insight into children\u2019s thoughts about older people, and how they imagine their own lives will be when they are older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why is this important? Well, we know that the world\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/population\/publications\/pdf\/ageing\/WPA2015_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">population is ageing<\/a>.&nbsp; We also know that there has been scare-mongering about the \u2018crisis\u2019 this will cause,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-36826166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">especially for the young<\/a>. Added to this, the language used to describe older people almost always has negative connotations; frail, past it, over-the-hill, to name but a few \u2013 which can contribute to a culture of ageism. But Palmore (2015) warns us that countering ageism will be challenging because it is so much a part of our culture that most people are not even aware of it.
