{"id":5057,"date":"2018-10-25T14:16:51","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T13:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qpol.qub.ac.uk\/?p=5057"},"modified":"2018-10-25T14:16:51","modified_gmt":"2018-10-25T13:16:51","slug":"orthodox-church-biggest-split-thousand-years-triggered-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qub.ac.uk\/qpol\/orthodox-church-biggest-split-thousand-years-triggered-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"Orthodox Church: biggest split in a thousand years triggered over Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Moscow Patriarchate recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/oct\/15\/russian-orthodox-church-cuts-ties-with-constantinople\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;that it is breaking its ties with the Patriarchate of Constantinople, triggering what is potentially the biggest split in the Orthodox Church in a thousand years. So why is one of the great defenders of Christianity tearing itself apart?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tussle between Moscow and Constantinople is over Ukraine, and Constantinople\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kyivpost.com\/ukraine-politics\/constantinople-revokes-effect-of-1686-tomos-entitling-moscow-patriarch-to-ordain-metropolitan-of-kyiv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declaration<\/a>&nbsp;on October 15 that the Ukrainian church is no longer part of Moscow\u2019s patrimony. And behind this is Ukraine\u2019s divided national identity \u2013 and the woes of its current president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have long been two main&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/569805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukrainian identities<\/a>: Eastern Slavic (or Little Russian) and Ukrainian. The first stresses the common origins and culture of Ukraine and Russia. An important element of this common heritage rests on the 988AD baptism of Rus in Kiev, the capital of Ancient Rus, seen in Russia as the crucible of the Russian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-ukraine-crisis-putin-people\/putin-says-russians-and-ukrainians-practically-one-people-idUSKBN0GT14720140829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stresses today<\/a>&nbsp;that Russians and Ukrainians are practically one people, a sentiment that inspired the concept of the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/globalinterests.org\/2015\/05\/26\/the-russian-world-russias-soft-power-and-geopolitical-imagination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russian World<\/a>\u201d and was used to justify Russia\u2019s 2014 aggression in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To continue reading, <a
